we would like to draw your attention today to the
Third DGF Young Investigators in Lipid Science Meeting
14-15 May 2018, Duesseldorf, Germany
This meeting is aimed at fostering collaboration between emerging scientists (young group leaders) active in different aspects of lipid science
in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The meeting is limited to 20 participants. All participants are encouraged to give
20 min oral presentations on their research focus to enable active discussion and future fruitful collaboration between biologists, chemists,
medical doctors and engineers from academy and industry with an interest in lipid science and lipid technology.
The meeting will take place at the BASF campus in Düsseldorf from 14 (starting afternoon) - 15 May 2018 (until early afternoon). Registration is free.
The conference dinner and part of the travel cost of the invited participants will be sponsored by the DGF. The location and coffee will be kindly
provided by BASF.
Meeting language is English.
To apply for participation please send an email with a short description of your current position and research
field to email@example.com
until 30 March 2018.

George Best, "I think I've found you a genius"
George Best (22 May 1946 – 25 November 2005) was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger
for Manchester United and the Northern Ireland national team. In 1968, he won the European Cup with Manchester United,
and was named the European Footballer of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. The Irish Football Association described
him as the "greatest player to ever pull on the green shirt of Northern Ireland".
Born and brought up in Belfast, Best began his club career in England with Manchester United, with the scout who had spotted his
talent at the age of 15 sending a telegram to manager Matt Busby which read: "I think I've found you a genius."
After making his debut aged 17, he scored 179 goals from 470 appearances over 11 years, and was the club's top goalscorer in the league
for five consecutive seasons.
Regarded as one of the greatest dribblers in the history of the sport, his playing style combined pace, skill, balance, feints, two-footedness,
goalscoring and the ability to beat defenders.
Best was one of the first celebrity footballers, earning the nickname "El Beatle" in 1966, but his subsequent extravagant lifestyle led to
various problems, most notably alcoholism, which he suffered from for the rest of his life. These issues affected him on and off the field,
at times causing controversy.
He said of his career: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds [women] and fast cars – the rest I just squandered".
After football, he spent some time as a football analyst, but his financial and health problems continued into his retirement.
He died in 2005, age 59, due to complications from the immunosuppressive drugs he needed to take after a liver transplant in 2002.
On what would have been his 60th birthday, Belfast City Airport was renamed the George Best Belfast City Airport.

Macromolecular materials based on the application of the Diels-Alder reaction to natural polymers and plant oils
Alessandro Gandini, Antonio J. F. Carvalho, Eliane Trovatti, Ricardo K. Kramer, and Talita M. Lacerda
The furan-meleimide thermally reversible Diels-Alder reaction applied to the elaboration of novel macromolecular materials from renewable resources
is reviewed. Different approaches are outlined depending on the substrate and results are discussed in terms of properties and potential
applications of the ensuing linear, branched, and crosslinked polymers, with particular emphasis on their recyclability. These chemical
modifications concern triglycerides and macromonomers derived from them, polysaccharides such as cellulose fibers and nanofibers, starch and
chitosan, as well as natural rubber and gelatin.
Antioxidant hydrophobicity and emulsifier type influences the partitioning of antioxidants in the interface improving oxidative
stability in O/W emulsions rich in n–3 fatty acids
Araceli López-Martínez and Alejandro Rocha-Uribe
Determining the distributions and interfacial concentrations of antioxidants in emulsions is crucial to understand their efficiency. Antioxidants
shown from top to bottom: tocopherol, trolox, propyl gallate and caffeic acid. Orientations and positions are illustrative.
Production of chemicals from microalgae lipids – status and perspectives
Sandra K. Hess, Bernard Lepetit, Peter G. Kroth and Stefan Mecking
Microalgae oil lipids are discussed as an alternative source for chemicals. The tuning of lipid production in microalgae via genetic engineering
and cultivation optimization for this purpose is reviewed. We further illuminate the bottlenecks of upscaling and the state of the art in industrial
algae production by means of three concrete case studies. We give insights into the catalytic functionalization to high-value products.

The furan-maleimide thermally reversible Diels–Alder reaction applied to the elaboration of novel macromolecular materials from renewable
resources (see image of polymerization and depolymerization) is reviewed on the basis of our investigations, which cover predominantly the
field to this date. Different approaches are outlined, depending on the substrate and the results discussed in terms of the properties and
potential applications of the ensuing linear, branched, and crosslinked polymers, with particular emphasis on their recyclability.
These chemical modifications concern triglycerides and macromonomers derived from them, polysaccharides such as cellulose fibers and
nanofibers, starch and chitosan, as well as natural rubber and gelatin.
