Dear colleagues and friends,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 58th International Conference on the Bioscience of Lipids (ICBL) –
Lipid Signaling in Health and Disease, which will be held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), September 10–14, 2017.
The 58th ICBL Symposium is co-organized by ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital of Zürich to entice both young and established Scientists with a focus
on translational lipid research to shape this international event.
The conference will focus on the role of lipid signaling in the development, diagnostics, and treatment of diseases. Top international scientists accepted our invitation to present their
most recent findings on the metabolism, transport, function and regulation of sterols, bile acids, triglycerides, fatty acids, and sphingolipids with respect to cardiovascular, metabolic,
or infectious diseases as well as immunity. In addition there will be numerous opportunities for young investigators to present their research in the form of short talks which will be selected
from the submitted abstracts.
Registration for this conference, a preliminary program and the list of confirmed speakers can be found at
http://icbl.info/2017/. We are very happy to announce that SwissBiotchNet will sponsor
several travel grants for young scientists.
We would be happy to welcome you to Zürich in September 2017.

Uppsala Castle, our dinner venue

Gustav Vasa began construction of Uppsala Slott in 1549, and the castle was the location of a major event of Swedish history known as the "Riksmöte". Gustav Vasa started his politically
vital tour ("Eriksgata") of the realm of Sweden from Uppsala Slott, and the castle was destined to play a major role for many years in the history of Sweden and of Uppsala.
Important events that have taken place at the castle include "Sturemorden" in 1567 (the murder by the mentally ill King Erik XIV of several noblemen accused of treason), and the decision by
Gustav II Adolf that Sweden should participate in what would later develop into the Thirty Years' War. It was in the Rikssal in the castle that Schering Rosenhane announced the abdication of
Queen Kristina on 6 June, 1654.

The castle was seriously damaged by fire in 1702, being reduced essentially to a ruin. Reconstruction took many years, and was indeed hampered by the remains of the castle being used as a quarry
for stone to be used in building Stockholm Palace.
The castle was the administrative centre of Uppland for many years, and is today the residence of the County Governor of Uppsala County.
Rikssalen, the former Hall of State, whose uses have included that of drying closet for the governor's wife, was restored in 1932 and is now Uppsala's most glittering festive location.

EJLST Highlights April Issue
Some highlights:
Antioxidant efficacies of rutin and rutin esters
in bulk oil and oil-in-water emulsion
Bena-Marie Lue, Ann-Dorit Moltke Sørensen, Charlotte Jacobsen, Zheng Guo and Xuebing Xu
Version of Record online: 24 AUG 2016 | DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201600049
Lipid oxidation in bulk oil and o/w emulsion. Rutin and BHT more efficient antioxidants in bulk oil and emulsion than rutin ester. Acylation of
rutin with C12 or C16 did not improve the antioxidant ability of rutin neither in bulk oil or emulsion.
Converting defatted silkworm pupae by Yarrowia lipolytica for enhanced lipid production
Xin-Yi Shi, Tai-Ying Li, Min Wang, Wei-Wei Wu, Wen-Jing Li, Qiong-Ying Wu, Fu-An Wu and Jun Wang
Version of Record online: 4 AUG 2016 | DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201600120
Defatted silkworm pupae (DSWP) with high level of protein and slightly oil were hydrolyzed to culture Yarrowia lipolytica W29. T
he ultrasound-assisted enzymatic pretreatment in the presence of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride salt ([Bmim]Cl) followed with
trypsin hydrolysis was applied to pretreat the DSWP. The recycle use of ionic liquid reduced the cost of pretreatment.
The degree of hydrolysate increased by 6.0-fold and the weight lost up to 84.57%. FTIR and SEM characterizations indicated that the
pretreatment promoted enzymatic hydrolysis. When replaced defatted silkworm pupae hydrolysate (DSWPH) with peptone at the weight
ratio of 2:1, the concentration of lipid increased by 3.0-fold and citric acid decreased to 0.27-fold. Given the large amount of
fatty acids accumulation, instead of citric acid accumulation, DSWPH could replace the industrial nitrogen source in the future.
Substrate and TBARS variability in a multi-phase oxidation system
Md Ahsan Ghani, Celia Barril, Danny R. Bedgood Jr and Paul D. Prenzler
Version of Record online: 12 OCT 2016 | DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201500500
TBARS variability: absorbance values at 532 nm for different batches of linoleic acid. Absorbance values show TBARS variability
in a multi-phase oxidation system in measuring antioxidant activity of 250 and 1000 µM Trolox.
