Dear members and friends of Euro Fed Lipid,
The change in the global political stability, which I mentioned in the 2014 year’s end message, has unfortunately continued. The Syrian civil war has expanded to Europe resulting in two very serious terrorist attacks in Paris causing the death of many young innocent people. This civil war is also the origin of an unpreceded migration of refugees from the Middle East to North Europe. Proposed solutions to bring this flow under control include ideas which could not be imagined several month ago, like restricting the freedom of travel in between the Schengen countries. At this moment it is difficult to predict how this instability will develop in 2016.

In this environment of increasing nationalism, Euro Fed Lipid continued to create progress in lipid research and development by bringing people together. The main activity to achieve this goal was the Euro Fed Lipid conference in Florence. This conference was attended by 650 participants who enjoyed the high quality scientific presentations and posters supported by a professional organization. They also took the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Florence with the Euro Fed Lipid dinner in one of the palaces as one of the highlights.

However, we should not underestimate the importance of the “smaller” events organized or supported by Euro Fed Lipid, like conferences organized by the divisions and the co-operation with the Oils and Fats exhibition in Munich.

My contribution to the Euro Fed Lipid leadership team has come to an end after four years as vice-president and two years as president. I have enjoyed the co-operation with my fellow officers, the discussions in the board and the support by the staff in the Frankfurt office. I have full confidence in my successor Pierre Villeneuve, the new vice-president Hans Christian Holm and Karin Schwarz who will continue as treasurer. I wish them all a fruitful continuation in leading our successful federation.

With my very best personal wishes to all of you for a safe year-end and a happy and healthy 2016.

Yours,

Van Duijn
Gerrit van Duijn
Euro Fed Lipid President

Beer in Belgium

GilladebeerBeer in Belgium varies from pale lager to lambic beer and Flemish red. There are approximately 180 breweries in the country, ranging from international giants to microbreweries.

On average, Belgians drink 84 litres of beer each year, down from around 200 each year in 1900. Most beers are bought or served in bottles, rather than cans, and almost every style of beer has its own particular, uniquely shaped glass or other drinking-vessel. Using the correct glass is considered to improve its flavor.

Brewing in Belgium dates back at least to the age of the first crusades in the 12th century. Under the Catholic church's permission, local French and Flemish abbeys brewed and distributed beer as a fund raising method. Kriek The relatively low-alcohol beer of that time was preferred as a sanitary option to available drinking water. What are now traditional, artisanal brewing methods evolved, under abbey supervision, during the next seven centuries.

In the 16th and 17th century, a beer termed crabbelaer was the most popular beer in Ghent; at the peak of its popularity, more than 50 different breweries produced more than 6 million liters a year. Other kinds of beer brewed in Ghent were klein bier, dubbel bier, clauwaert, dubbele clauwaert and dusselaer.

DGF: 5th Leipzig Symposium

Processing and Analytics
How does co-operation work in Practice?

Leipzig, 9-10 March 2016

Leipzig The German Society for Fat Science (DGF) would once again like to invite you to Leipzig, for the 5th Leipzig symposium. The Leipzig symposium has always been committed to stimulating discussion among the operational bodies of the vegetable oil industry about the latest trends, in terms of technology, operation and management.

Furthermore it aims at offering a forum for plant managers, productivity leaders, and QHSE managers to cover the discussion of 'hands-on' topics. This year we would like discuss the opportunities generated by applying the latest developments in analytics to process technology and production practice. The progress in analytics is fulminant - detection levels are spiraling down almost daily, more and more compounds can be analyzed in a much simpler manner. Many compounds can even detected 'on-line' in a very reliable manner, with even new compounds being identified with further scientific debates in case these are suspected contaminants.

These developments affect the processing of oilseeds and vegetable oils. We want to use this symposium mainly to stimulate the debate between experts in analytic technologies and experts in processing to identify and to exploit synergies, but also to identify further gaps/needs in development. The industry should be aware of these debates/developments to have a chance to be actively involved.
