Trade Fair oils+fats

Dear Reader,

From September 15 through September 17, 2015 we will once again have the opportunity to meet with decision-makers and opinion-formers of the industry at the “oils + fats” in Munich.

Throughout the year worldwide small events address the issue of oilseeds processing and other related subjects. At the oils+fats 2015 exhibitors from the whole world present current solutions dealing with all aspects of manufacturing and further processing of oils and fats. In addition experts from science and industry will discuss the markets, technologies and challenges of the future  in the supporting program under the motto: Science meets industry.

The “oils + fats 2013” was a great success and we expect an even growing interest in this years’ exposition therefore it is a “must” for us. Be there in Munich, strengthen the communication within the industry and engage in dialogue with us. Interesting lectures round off the program -  and Munich is always worth a visit.
Please find all details regarding the fair here.

Il Duomo di Firenze

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (English, "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower") is the main church of Florence. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. Dome
The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

By the beginning of the 15th century, after a hundred years of construction, the structure was still missing its dome. The basic features of the dome had been designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296. His model called for an octagonal dome higher and wider than any that had ever been built.

A modern understanding of physical laws and the mathematical tools for calculating stresses was centuries into the future. Brunelleschi, like all cathedral builders, had to rely on intuition and whatever he could learn from the large scale models he built. To lift 37,000 tons of material, including over 4 million bricks, he invented hoisting machines and lewissons for hoisting large stones. These specially designed machines and his structural innovations were Brunelleschi's chief contribution to architecture.

EJLST: Highlights March

Special Issue: Fats and oils as renewable feedstock for the chemical industry

This special issue of EJLST contains 15 papers providing an update on the newest developments in oleochemistry. The covered topics can be roughly divided into three main areas including the application of olefin metathesis reactions to unsaturated fatty compounds, biotechnological transformation of fats and oils, and the use of plant oil derived renewable resources as feedstock for polymer synthesis. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ejlt.v117.2/issuetoc

[OPEN ACCESS] Comprehensive and quantitative profiling of lipids in human milk, cow milk and infant formula by GC and MS/MSALL

Sokol, Ejsing and colleagues present a workflow for in-depth analysis of milk lipids combining gas chromatography and a shotgun lipidomics routine termed MS/MSALL . Milk lipid analysis is routinely performed by GC to report the fatty acid composition, but no structural or quantitative information about individual lipids is provided. In the current paper it is shown that complementary GC and MS/MSALL analysis is a powerful and quantitative approach to characterize both compositional and structural features of milk lipids. This approach can be useful for functional studies of the health promoting effects of milk lipids or in quality control. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/enhanced/doi/10.1002/ejlt.201400575/

Phenolic antioxidants and human skin injury

Impaired wound healing-related problems can be partly attributed to the continuous production and exposure to reactive species which attack the skin and can overwhelm tissue antioxidants and other oxidant-degrading pathways. In this Special Feature, Vasilchenko, Haltrich and colleagues describe an innovative approach to protect wounds from damage with the help of phenolic antioxidants and an enzyme for continuous recycling of the oxidized antioxidants. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/enhanced/doi/10.1002/lite.201400078/
