7th European Symposium on Plant Lipids
5-8 July 2015, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. UK

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to be hosting the 7th European Symposium on Plant Lipids organized by Euro Fed Lipid. For your diaries please note the symposium will be held in Harpenden, England from July 5th to the 8th, 2015. The symposium will be in the newly opened conference centre on site at Rothamsted Research, the oldest agricultural research institute in the world, and based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Harpenden is exceptionally well-connected to both rail and air transportation networks, yet still retains the feel of a typical historic English village. There are many remarkable historical and cultural attractions only a short journey from Harpenden, with central London, Oxford and Cambridge all within easy reach.

It is our pleasure to host this event, continuing the series of meetings illuminating the key functions of plant lipids. The scientific program will include oral contributions by both senior and younger scientists, covering the most exciting and challenging areas of plant lipid research. We hope that this meeting in Harpenden will showcase the very best of current advances in the field, and also provide a stimulating environment to catalyse dynamic interactions and collaborations. We look forward to welcoming you all to Rothamsted and Harpenden.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I'd like to kindly invite you to support this symposium by attending the conference and presenting your latest results.

Aigues Mortes

Aigues-Mortes is located in the Petite Camargue 20km east of Montpellier. The name comes from the Aigues-Mortes ("dead water") marshes and ponds that stretch around the village and also the fact that there has never been potable water at Aigues-Mortes.

In 1240, Louis IX, who wanted to get rid of the influence of the Italian navy for transporting troops to the Crusades, focused on the strategic position of his kingdom. At that time, Marseille belonged to his brother Charles of Anjou, King of Naples, Agde, Count of Toulouse, and Montpellier, and King of Aragon. Louis IX wanted direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. He obtained the town and the surrounding lands by exchange of properties with the monks of an abbey.

From Aigues-Mortes Louis IX twice departed for the Crusades: the Seventh Crusade in 1248 and again for the Eighth Crusade in 1270 for Tunis where he died of dysentery.

In 1272, his son and successor, Philip the Bold, ordered the continuation of the construction of walls to completely encircle the small town. The work would not be completed for another 30 years.

At the beginning of the 15th century, important works were being undertaken to facilitate access to Aigues-Mortes from the sea. The old Grau-Louis, dug for the Crusades, was replaced by the Grau-de-la-Croisette and a port was dug at the base of the Tower of Constance. It lost its importance from 1481 when Provence and Marseille were attached to the kingdom of France.

During the French Revolution, the city was called Port-Pelletier, although at that time the port had almost disappeared due to silting.

Healthy sausages that taste good

Researchers from Colombia and Spain demonstrate that pork backfat in frankfurters-type sausages can be completely replaced with a blend of modified vegetable oils which is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol free.

Fat, lipids, or cheese: Understanding the algebra of the consumer mind

To understand whether consumers like or dislike fatty products, we need to present the information about fat in a meaningful way. Embedded within the context of cheese, it is found that some people like fat very much, even though they might not be prepared to admit it.
