An almost all-time-high attendance is expected for the 12th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Montpellier.

More than 400 posters will be on display (compared to 250 in regular years), so make sure to reserve more time to visit the 25 table top exhibitors and the poster exhibition.

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer







Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is the capital of the Camargue, located east of Montpellier, with a population of 2500 (50.000+ during summer holidays).

The town is not only a sea resort, it is also a pilgrimage destination for Roma (Gypsies), who gather yearly for a religious festival in honor of Saint Sarah. Dark-skinned Saint Sarah is said to have possibly been the Egyptian servant of the three Marys.

The day of the pilgrimage honouring Sarah is May 24; her statue is carried down to the sea on this day to re-enact her arrival in France.

According to various legends, during a persecution of early Christians, commonly placed in the year 42, Lazarus, his sisters Mary Magdalene and Martha, Mary Salome (the mother of the Apostles John and James), Mary Jacobe and Maximin were sent out to sea in a boat.

They arrived safely on the southern shore of Gaul at the place later called Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. In another version Sarah was a local woman who welcomed the three Marys on their arrival.

A statue of Ste. Sarah is in the crypt of the church, which also encloses a 4th-century BC pagan altar.

The three saints Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe, whose relics are the focus of the devotions of pilgrims, are believed to be the women who were the first witnesses to the empty tomb at the resurrection of Jesus.

Review: Tiger nut oil

Tiger nut is considered an under researched food plant by the United Nations but the oil has considerable potential for exploitation: it has a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its fatty acid composition is similar to olive oil. This Review by researchers from University of Readingthe University of Reading, UK presents the current knowledge and research trends concerning tiger nut oil.

Lipid Technology

Mimicking natural oil bodies for stabilising oil-in-water food emulsions

This Feature describes a novel technique which has the potential to prevent lipid oxidation in food emulsions. Highly unsaturated fatty acids which are constituents of oilseeds can be incorporated in to food emulsions in the form of intact oil bodies. The oil body technology can be applied to any oil, including oils which do not constitute natural oil bodies such as fish oil.

The use of lipids as phase change materials for thermal energy storage

Phase change materials are capable of absorbing and releasing large amounts of thermal energy as latent heat at constant temperature as they undergo a phase transition, commonly between solid and liquid phases. This Feature gives a brief overview of phase change materials, highlights the various types of lipid substances examined for PCM applications, and suggests potential future areas of study.
