36 hours in Montpellier

The British newspaper "The Telegraph" has some recommendations for you:

"Montpellier is, at any time, the most seductive city in the French south – elegant, cultured and tolerant, with Mediterranean blood coursing through its veins and dynamism to spare. Lacking industry, the place has majored on brains and bravura. World-class architects are forever turning up to add showpieces. The trams – designed latterly by Christian Lacroix as moving tableaux – have been called “the sexiest in the world”. It takes a startling city to make trams sexy.

In autumn, the light will likely still be unfiltered, the sun warm enough for sitting out on the Comédie, France’s most graceful central square (pack a cardigan all the same). Behind, the medieval squeeze of the old town scurries with a sense of conspiracy in which everyone can join. Before rise some of the country’s more enviable contemporary developments. And, beyond them, the sea is a 50-minute cycle ride.

Indoors, the Musée Fabre has a cracking Caravaggio-inspired show that ends on Sunday (museefabre.montpellier-agglo.com). The Montpellier orchestral season is truffled with highlights (orchestre-montpellier.com). And Les Internationales de la Guitare fest brings world-class pluckers to town, from September 29 to October 20 (internationalesdelaguitare.com). Elsewhere, bars throb to whatever sound you want, and restaurants cram in everyone – tots and grandparents may still be out at midnight. “The problem,” says a Montpellieraine friend, a bit sheepishly, “is that we have everything.” The problem is, she’s right."

Phospholipids in Pharmaceutics: Special Issue Preview

Lipopeptide-modified PEG-PE-based pharmaceutical nanocarriers for enhanced uptake in blood–brain barrier cells and improved cytotoxicity against glioma cells Lipopeptide-modified PEG-PE micelles show enhanced uptake into human glioma cells. This improved uptake correlates with higher cytotoxicity of incorporated anti-cancer drug paclitaxel.

DSPC or DPPC as main shell component influences ligand distribution and binding area of lipid-coated targeted microbubbles

Ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) consist of gas-filled coated microbubbles with diameters of 1–10 µm. Targeted UCA can bind to biomarkers associated with disease through coating-incorporated ligands, making ultrasound molecular imaging possible. The image shows targeted biotinylated DSPC and DPPC-based microbubbles bound to streptavidin-coated surface. Left graph: binding area; right panels: microbubbles (red fluorescent) bound to streptavidin-coated surface (green fluorescent).

Trans fat replacements: A global overview

The removal of trans fats from the diet has been achieved through government legislation in cooperation with oil processors, the food industry and the agribusiness sectors. Often this was accomplished at considerable expense. Only time will tell if the ends justified the means. If significant reductions in coronary heart disease and other afflictions attributed to trans fat occur the efforts will be justified.

31st ISF Lectureship Series 2015

The World Congress on Oils and Fats and the 31st ISF Lectureship Series will be held in November 2015, under the slogan "Evolution, innovation and challenges towards a sustainable future". The event will provide a forum in which attendees can exchange information and bring themselves up to date on the development of products, technologies, research and experiences that are occurring at a global level in the field of fats and oils.

The conference is being organized by ASAGA together with the ISF (International Society for Fats Research) and LA AOCS (Latin-American Section of the American Oil Chemists´ Society).

The 5-day event will take place at the Metropolitano, which is the most important events and exhibitions center in the city of Rosario. Renowned specialists, researchers, professionals and suppliers from the international industry will join together to participate in knowledge transfer and debates. Choosing Rosario as the venue for the conference is apt, as the city is acknowledged as the headquarters for the processing of oilseeds on a global scale.
