Dear Reader,
my name is Magdalena Rudzińska and I work as a Assistant Professor at the Poznan University of Life Sciences, Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (Poland). Since 2013 I have been honored to be a member of Euro Fed Lipid board. When prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Krygier resigned, members of Fats and Oils Section Polish Society of Food Technologists have decided to appoint me as Polish representative in the Euro Fed Lipid Board.

I am thankful for the trust and I knew that taking over the position after such an excellent scientist and educator as prof. Krygier would be a great challenge for me. I would like to express my gratitude to prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Krygier who was a very good representative and ambassador of Polish Fats and Oils Section on European forum. With warm wishes I would like to thank for his hard work and professionalism, cordiality and friendship. I hope that prof. Krygier will be still our teacher, mentor and leader and we could benefit from his experience.

My adventure with food science began in 1987, when I finished my M.Sc. thesis concerning the evaluation of aroma properties of parsley and celery roots in terms of their suitability for the production of dried vegetables. I was awarded the Ph.D. degree of agricultural sciences in 2003 on the basis of a dissertation entitled “Studies on the formation of phytosterol oxidation products during food storage and processing”. In 2004 I was employed as adjunct and since 2012 I have been working as assistant professor. What is more since 2013 I am a science director of the Institute of Food Technology of Plant Origin, Poznan University of Life Sciences.

My scientific and research work is conducted in lipid chemistry, especially in quantitative and qualitative analysis of sterols and sterol oxidation products formed during processing and storage of food as well as methods to inhibit the sterol oxidation process thanks to the application of natural and synthetic antioxidants. I also identified and analyzed volatile compounds, dimers and oligomers as a derivatives formed during thermo-oxidative degradation of sterols. In the recent years my work also has been focused on the characteristics of oils from unconventional seeds and fruits as sources of phytochemical compounds and polyenoic fatty acids. One of the main aspect of my recent research is utilization of microorganisms for production of polyunsaturated fatty acids and using them for enrichment of food products.

As a member of Euro Fed Lipid board I hope to develop cooperation between Polish and European scientists in chemistry, analytics and technology of food lipids.

So I would like to invite all those interested in our work to join Fats and Oils Section Polish Society of Food Technologists and European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids and support our team with his membership.

12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress, 14-17 September 2014, Montpellier, France

12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress, 14-17 September 2014, Montpellier, France

After having passed the deadline for oral contributions the submission of lecture abstracts is closed now.

The organisers are grateful for having received far more suggestions than they are able to place in the congress programme, which will ensure a top-quality programme. At the same time the committee wishes to apologize that not all lecture abstracts can be accepted as such due to the same reason. Some authors will be asked to present posters instead. We sincerely hope for your understanding and cooperation.

The committee will meet 6 March in Montpellier to finalise the lecture programme. Authors will get confirmation letters soon after.

Please note that poster abstracts can be submitted anytime until the start of the congress.
However, the following deadlines apply:
- to be included in the printed programme: 6 March
- to be included in the book of abstracts: end of July, details to follow

New sponsors and exhibitors this month:

Only seven five tables are left. If you intend to exhibit reserve your table soon!

The Romans in Southern France

Gallia Narbonensis, located in what is now Languedoc and Provence, became a Roman province in the late 2nd century BC. The Romans had called it Provincia Nostra ("our province") or simply Provincia ("the province"). The term has survived in the modern French name of the eastern part of the area, Provence.

Not surprisingly, they left some very remarkable landmarks, among them the Pont du Gard, which is an aqueduct bridge that crosses the Gardon River. It is part of the Nîmes aqueduct, a 50 km-long structure built by the Romans to carry water from a spring at Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes). Built in the 1st century AD, the Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and is one of the best preserved. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985.

The townscape of Nîmes itself is dominated until today by another Roman building, the Arena.
Built around 70 AD, it was remodelled in 1863 to serve as a bullring. The Arenas of Nîmes is the site of two annual bullfights during the Feria de Nîmes, and it is also used for other public events.

The building encloses an elliptical central space 133 m long by 101 m wide. It is ringed by 34 rows of seats supported by a vaulted construction. It has a capacity of 16,300 spectators and since 1989 has a movable cover and a heating system
