Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the 10th GERLI/16th GEM Lipidomics meeting entitled "From Membranes to Pathologies" which will be held in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, near Nice, in the South-East of France,  from November 10th to 14th, 2013.

The meeting will bring together people interested in lipid biochemistry and biophysics, lipidomics and membrane biology, as well as those more interested in lipid mediators and their roles in human diseases, and new hopes towards improved diagnosis and therapy.

Meeting information are available on the conference website: http://www.gemgerli2013.fr/cgi-bin/index.cgi?page=1&lang=uk

The website will be opened for registration and abstract submission from May 31 to October 31, 2013. Note that space is limited and registration will be made available on a first-served basis.

We are looking forward to welcome you in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat next November.

On behalf of the GERLI and GEM organizing committees,

Euro Fed Lipid Congress 2013, 27-30 October 2013

If you plan to attend the major event for the Fats & Oils world in Europe this year do not hesitate to register AND book your hotel room through the Euro Fed Lipid online registration page

before you go on summer vacation!

The number of congress registrations is already surprisingly high and double rooms will certainly be sold out within 2-3 weeks. Single rooms are still available, but the rooms are booked on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Please note that public transportation from other hotels may not be easily available. Due to the traffic situation, taxi transportation from Anatyla city center can take more than 60 min, so it is definitely recommended to book at the congress hotel.

As you may have noticed already all time slots for lectures are filled and we maintain a waiting list. If you wish to present a lecture we recommend to submit a poster presentation and notify us that you wish to be placed on the waiting list for a lecture.

Poster abstracts are being accepted until very short before the congress, but to reach the book of abstract make sure to submit the abstrcat before 1 September.

Antalya: Not just salt water!

Diving and Rafting
Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast. It is Turkey's largest international sea resort, located on the Turkish Riviera. There is no better way to enjoy Antalya’s crystal blue waters then to go scuba diving, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the ocean, underwater life and perhaps not only see some antique ruins but perhaps some interesting wrecks.

There are numerous diving sites to choose from in and around the surrounding areas of Antalya’s coastline from Kemer to Kas, providing you with the opportunity to no only enjoy its marine life of the coastal waters but also caves and canyons.

For those of you who are bit more adventurous why not take a rafting trip in Antalya. An exciting day out to race the rapids whilst viewing the breathtaking cedar forests of the Koprulu Canyon National Park, Duden waterfalls, the islands of the Gulf of Antalya not forgetting the beautiful secluded beaches.

Waterfalls: Kursunlu Falls
The Kusunlu waterfall is located about 19 km from Antalya. The waterfall is on one of the tributaries of the Aksu River, where the tributary drops from Antalya's plateau to the coastal plain. It is situated in the midst of a pine forest of exceptional beauty. If you prefer the peace and quite of nature than this is a must see, where you can enjoy the sounds of the cascading waterfalls and wildlife while walking along the nature pathways through the pine trees to the waterfall.

There are also plenty of picnic areas along the small lakes where you can sit and have a picnic or just watch the turtles and other animals in their natural habitat.

Physical Principles of Lipids in Food Products and Health

Physical Principles of Lipids in Food Products and Health
Weetwood Conference Centre, Leeds, UK, 5 - 6 September 2013

Organised by SCI’s Lipid Group in Collaboration with the University of Leeds
'Fat' has become a byword for ill-health in our nutrition-obsessed world. Yet fats, or more exactly fatty acids and their glycerol esters the mono- di- and triacylglycerols are essential to health. They are so important that humans have evolved mechanisms which ensure that we greatly desire fats in all their delicious forms, in baked goods, chocolate, confectionery, ice-cream, dairy products - the list just goes on and on. Their importance is testified to by the fact that fat and vegetable oil refining and production, together with goods such as fatty spreads and chocolate, are the single most important food sector in the world.

This conference will be of interest to those working in fat crystallization and processing with researchers working on the biochemistry of polyphenols, phytosterols and plant stanols; as well as industrial scientists, technologists and engineers working with fats and concerned about their impact in their products and on human health.

EJLST: The (unexpected) impact of the Impact Factor

A few days ago, a fat, ugly fly landed on the window frame in our office. My colleague, intrepid as she always is, got hold of a small pink notepad with ponies on the cover and hit the fly on the head. The fly was visibly annoyed, rolling its thousands of eyes and buzzing in distress, but it was otherwise unhurt and casually continued its inspection of the window frame. It was an exceptionally muscular and tough fly, and I realized that the soft note pad was no match for such a fiend and that we need something with more clout. I handed my colleague a recent copy of the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology to have another go: the monster fly was flattened under

the great impact (2.266*) of EJLST!

*The Impact Factor® is published annually by Thomson Reuters. It is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past two years have been cited in the Journal Citation Reports year. EJLST’s IF has increased from 1.733 in the previous year to 2.266.
