It is our pleasure to invite you to the 27th Nordic Lipid Symposium in Helsinki, June 17th - 19th 2013. The Nordic LipidForum has a long history of bringing together experts from both the academia and the industry, worldwide. Our special focus is on the Nordic raw materials such as fish and other marine oils, rapeseed, camelina and flaxseed oil. LipidForum also gives special attention to young researchers by offering grants to attend the symposium and by organizing an Academy course on “Functional Lipids” prior to the 27th Nordic Lipid Symposium. The symposium will address five different topics with invited keynote speakers:
  1. Impact of lipids on human health
  2. Exploitation of novel plant and animal sources for lipids in food and feed
  3. Lipid composition and analysis
  4. Advances and applications in oil processing technologies
  5. Enhancing oxidative stability

It is for the first time that Helsinki provides a setting for the LipidForum symposium. Helsinki is unique among Northern European cities as its identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and the West. The lifestyle in Helsinki is full of contrasts and activities in the form of hundreds of events and friendly people. We welcome you to join us in Helsinki,

Euro Fed Lipid Congress 2013, 27-30 October 2013

The scientific committee has met in Antalya to finalise the lecture programme. Due to the high number and high quality of submission a marvellous congress can be expected.

The programme will be soon available at the congress webpage http://www.eurofedlipid.org/meetings/antalya/

Confirmations to authors will be sent soon after.

Additional poster abstracts are welcome until the start of the congress in October.

Registration for the congress is already possible at the congress webpage.

Antalya - A Golfer's Paradise

Golf holidays in Turkey, in particular Belek (some kilometers east of Antalya), are an almost other-worldy experience. Rows of five-star hotels are strung along the Belek beach like luxury cruise ships moored in an ocean of pines. Seemingly few golfers venture far from their luxury Turkish hotels (apart from heading for the Turkish golf courses in Belek) as there are all manner of entertainments and distractions at your disposal in the hotels, compared to relatively few outside.

There are fourteen golf courses in Belek, all of which are of a very high standard and there are one or two that would justify a trip to Turkey and golfing in Belek alone.

Crystallization and melting properties of extra virgin olive oil studied by synchrotron XRD and DSC

Crystallization and melting properties of extra virgin olive oil TAGs were studied using synchrotron XRD and DSC. The presence of different polymorphs was highlighted. The thermal events were associated to the formation of two different β’ crystals: a triple-chain length (3L) and a quadruple chain length structure (4L). During heating, polymorphic transformation from β’ to β form was detected.

Medium-chain alkyl esters of tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol antioxidants by cuphea oil transesterification
Effective lipophilic antioxidants were prepared by non-aqueous enzymatic transesterification of plant phenols with cuphea oil. Transesterification of olive oil phenols with fatty acids from cuphea oil can occur by using the reaction product to solubilize substrates. The developed process would be suitable for commercial production.

Effects of nutrition labeling on edible oil processing and consumption patterns in the US
The period from 2003 to present has had a profound effect on the edible oil industry. Health/nutrition issues including trans, saturated and omega-3 acids in the diet have impacted the soybean market, edible oil consumption patterns and consumer perception of lipid based foods.

Deep eutectic solvents: Synthesis, application, and focus on lipase-catalyzed reactions
Deep eutectic solvents are novel media with properties similar to ionic liquids but providing some additional advantages such as a lower cost and environmental impact. Here the key characteristics and potential applications of deep eutectic solvents with a special focus on lipase catalysed reactions are reviewed.
