Euro Fed Lipid Newsletter September 2011:  In hindsight - Euro Fed Lipid ten years after its founding

Dear Reader,
Initially, our vision was to strengthen the potential of lipid science and technology across Europe by providing a common platform for discussion for professionals in academia and industry. Together with like-minded colleagues and after three and a half years of preparations, Euro Fed Lipid was officially founded on 19 September 2001 during the 25th Congress of the International Society of Fat Research (ISF) in Berlin.

Now a decade later, there exists a federal structure balancing interests of societies in membership with those of the Federation, as well as our official journal, the "European Journal of Science and Technology of Lipids" (EJLST). Both Euro Fed Lipid and EJLST have established themselves as highly competitive players in the international lipids, fats and oils community.

By providing a structure for European meetings and conferences - and thereby effectively reducing their number - Euro Fed Lipid has significantly diminished the potential for conflict among national European and non-European societies which arises through competition for funding resources and attendance of overlapping meetings. Growth in membership also made it feasible for Euro Fed Lipid to switch from a biannual to an annual central congress. At these conferences, the ten different scientific and technical Divisions of the Federation present new knowledge and practical advances to professionals from academia and industry. It has also become tradition that annual meetings feature plenary lectures that are given by recipients of the prestigious awards created by Euro Fed Lipid and some member societies. The list of award recipients displays the high standards we set for ourselves.

Euro Fed Lipid has legal status based on a charter. The governing body is still quite minimalist, headed by a Council of Management and run out of an office in Frankfurt by the Managing Director and administrative assistants. The office is friendly, reliable, and constantly searching for new funding and resources.  A more recent initiative in this respect is involvement in the international "oils + fats" trade fair.

We are extremely pleased to learn that membership, either direct or via member societies, has grown to 2000 professionals to date. The rise in individual members is accompanied by a rise in the number of member societies. Euro Fed Lipid started with four founding societies (from France, Germany, The Netherlands and United Kingdom) at the precursor conference in Würzburg in 2000 and has since grown to thirteen member societies involving sixteen countries. We are hopeful that these numbers will further increase - as they say, the sky is the limit.
