Rotterdam

Rotterdam with 580.000 inhabitants is the second largest city in the Netherlands, after the capital Amsterdam.
Rotterdam is situated on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas ('New Meuse'), one of the channels in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse rivers.

Rotterdam was founded in the mid 13th century after a dam had been constructed in the River Rotte. Rotterdam received municipal rights in 1340. Over the centuries Rotterdam grew from a fishing village into an international centre of trade, transport, industry and distribution.

In the Second World War the city centre was devastated. Now, many years later, a new, modern city centre has risen from the ashes. The avant-garde architecture is famous at home and abroad.
The city is unlike Holland's other cities. Its international orientation as a port and the regeneration of its city centre have made Rotterdam a business city without parallel with outstanding architecture and delightful culture. It is a city with an abundance of attractions, festivals and museums. A swinging, young city with excellent shopping facilities, restaurants and cafes. Rotterdam is also home to the Dutch half of Consumer Goods company
Unilever and its research center in Vlaardingen (a suburb of Rotterdam).

The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and was the world's busiest port from 1962 to 2004, until it was overtaken by Shanghai.

The port's main activities are petrochemical industries and general cargo handling and transshipment. The harbour functions as an important transit point for bulk materials between the European continent and overseas. From Rotterdam goods are transported by ship, river barge, train or road. Being the ''Gateway to Europe'' Rotterdam has a hinterland of 500 million inhabitants.

The windmills of Kinderdijk (15 km east of Rotterdam) are one of the best known Dutch tourist sites. They were placed on the list of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.

Kinderdijk is situated in a polder at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands.

Flood control in the Netherlands is an important issue for the Netherlands as about two thirds of the country is vulnerable to flooding while at the same time the country is among the most densely populated on earth.

Natural sand dunes and man made dikes, dams and floodgates provide the defense against storm surges from sea. River dikes prevent flooding from water flowing into the country by the major rivers Rhine and Meuse, while a complicated system of drainage ditches, canals and pumping stations (historically: windmills) keep the low lying parts dry for habitation and agriculture.

Water control boards are the independent local government bodies responsible for maintaining this system. In modern times flood disasters coupled with technological development have led to large construction works to reduce the influence of the sea and prevent future floods.
