The
Venue
Graz
is the capital of the Austrian province of Styria. With about a quarter
of a million inhabitants, Graz is Austria's second largest
city.
The city, first
mentioned
in 1128, lies at an intersection of several European cultures. Romanic,
Slavic, Magyar and Alpine-Germanic influences have mixed here to form a
uniquely distinctive character. Wandering through the old town, which
happens to be one of the biggest historically intact architectural
ensembles of the German-speaking world, this character is illustrated
in buildings ranging in style from Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and
Historicism up to Art Nouveau. On December 1, 1999, this singular city
center became a UNESCO world cultural heritage site.
Although
Graz has been
the capital of inner Austria and
residence of
the Hapsburgs, 2003 is considered to be the most significant
year in history. Graz was named "Cultural Capital of Europe" by the EU
Ministries of Culture. With a vital and colorful cultural program, Graz
managed to attract visitors from all over the world and generate an
ongoing resonance. As a cultural capital, Graz has claimed a
significant place on the map and today is mentioned in the same breath
as Vienna and Salzburg.
Graz is home of 4 universities, 37.00 students are enrolled
there. The
Karl Franzens University was founded as early as 1585. Apart from five
(later) Nobel laureates, also Alfred Wegener held lectures there.
The
University of
Technology or Erzherzog Johann University was founded in 1811 as a
school of natural science at the Joanneum
by the great promoter of Styria, Archduke Johann. The range of studies
offered today reaches from nuclear physics to space research. Numerous
graduates of the
faculty of architecture enjoy worldwide recognition. The Arts
University devotes itself to music and the performing arts.
Especially its Jazz department
lures many foreign students to Graz.
Four universities in Graz - that's
not all yet. In Graz-Eggenberg there is Fachhochschule (university of
applied sciences) Joanneum - the biggest Fachhochschule centre in
Austria.
Pumpkin seed oil is a culinary specialty of Styria. The
viscous oil is
dark green to dark brown in colour. Pumpkinseed oil has a
nutty
taste and is very healthy due to its richness in polyunsaturated fatty
acids. It isis made of the skinless seeds of a special type of pumpkin,
the "Styrian Oil Pumpkin" (lat. Cucurbita pepo var. styriaca, also
known as var. oleifera). The oil is an important export commodity of
Styria.
Austrian,
Lufthansa, Ryanair and other carriers offer regular services to a
number of destinations, including direct flights to
Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Friedrichshafen, Gothenburg, Hanover,
Innsbruck, Linz, London (Stansted), München, Olbia, Stavanger,

Vienna with short connecting flights to Graz. The airport is close to
the
city center. Public busses bring you conveniently from Graz main
station / Jakominiplatz to Graz Airport. The bus stop is right outside
the passenger terminal, right next to the arrival area.

Graz
by Train and Bus
An important junction
between Middle- and Southeastern
Europe, Graz is hub for many national and international train and bus
connections.
The trains leaving from Graz are operated either by the ÖBB, the
Austrian National Railway or by the GKB, the Graz-Köflach
Railway. You'll find all the bus connections at Verkehrsverbund or at Mobil Zentral.
