The province of Antalya is located on the Mediterranean coast of south-west Turkey, between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean sea. In summer, it is the centre of Turkey's tourism industry, attracting 30% of foreign tourists visiting Turkey. It features a shoreline of 657 km with beaches, ports, and ancient cities scattered throughout, including the World Heritage Site Xanthos. During autumn and winter  the numerous hotels with congress centers cater for congresses and other events, as well as training camps for professional sports teams. Antalya's airport is the second largest in Turkey.

The provincial capital is Antalya city with a population of 775,000. Antalya is the fastest-growing province in Turkey; with a 4.17% yearly population growth rate between the years 1990-2000, compared with the national rate of 1.83%. This growth is due to a fast rate of urbanization.

Kaleiçi, the restored historical center of the city -with its hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shopping- retains much of its historical character; its restoration won the Golden Apple Tourism Prize.
The city sites show traces of Lycian, Pamphylian, and Hellenistic architecture and cultures - but also mainly Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman- architecture and cultures.  Cumhuriyet Square, the main square of the city, on occasion features temporary open air exhibitions and performances.

The whole area is shielded from the cold northerly winds by the Taurus Mountain range, having a characteristically Mediterranean climate -with hot, dry summers and moderately warm winters. In November the average high temperature is 21 degrees.

History
It is uncertain when the site of the current city was first inhabited. Attalos II, king of Pergamon, was believed to have founded the city around 150 BC, naming it Attalia and selecting it as a naval base for his powerful fleet. However, excavations in 2008 have uncovered remains dating to the 3rd century BC, suggesting that the city was founded earlier than previously supposed. Antalya became part of the Roman Republic in 133 BC when King Attalos III of Pergamum willed his kingdom to Rome on his death. The city grew and prospered during the Ancient Roman period and
Christianity started to spread in the region after 2nd century. Antalya was visited by Paul of Tarsus, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles: "From Perga, Paul and Barnabas went down to Attalia and sailed from there to Antioch after preaching in Pisidia and Pamphylia" (Acts 14:25-26).

Antalya was a major city in the Byzantine Empire. It was the capital of the Byzantine Theme of Carabisiani,  which occupied the southern coasts of Asia Minor and the Aegean Islands. At the time of the accession of John II Comnenus (1118) it was an isolated outpost against the Turks, accessible only by sea. The city, along with the surrounding region, was conquered by the Seljuk Turks in the early 13th century. Antalya was the capital of the Turkish Beylik of Teke (1321-1423) until its conquest by the Ottomans.

In the 20th century the population of Antalya increased as Turks from the Caucasus and the Balkans moved into Anatolia. By 1911 it was a city of about 25,000 people, including many Christians and Jews, still living in separate quarters around the walled mina or port.
The city was briefly occupied by the Italians from the end of the First World War until the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

Attractions around Antalya

Aspendos or Aspendus was an ancient Greco-Roman city northeast of Antalya.
It is known for having the best-preserved theater of antiquity. With a diameter of 96 meters (315 ft), the theater provided seating for 7,000. The theater was built in 155 by the Greek architect Zenon, a native of the city, during the rule of Marcus Aurelius. It was periodically repaired by the Seljuks, who used it as a caravansary, and in the 13th century the stage building was converted into a palace by the Seljuqs of Rum.

The Aspendos
on occasion features open air performances during the warmer months.

An acropolis dating back to the Bronze Age can be seen loacted there. During the Hellenistic period, Perga was one of the richest and most beautiful cities in the ancient world, famous for its temple of Artemis. It also is notable for being the home of the renowned ancient Greek mathematician Apollonius of Perga.
