Dear members and friends of Euro Fed Lipid,

I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year 2018 with lots of happiness and success in both your personal and professional lives.

The end of the year 2017 was the completion of 2 years of Euro Fed Lipid presidency by Pierre Villeneuve. I thank Pierre for his invaluable contribution to the success of our organization. I hope that I with the help of all of you can continue the work to deliver on the Euro Fed Lipid mission, the furthering of lipid science and technology and the cooperation and exchange of ideas between scientists and technologists at a European level.

I have learned a lot from Pierre, he started his new year greeting with a positive story, so I will do the same: The Economist announced that the number of people living below the threshold of extreme poverty in the world has decreased by about a billion in 30 years, despite the world population increasing by roughly 4 billion people over the same period. The positive news is clearly the decrease in the number of people living below the threshold of extreme poverty, the sad news is the huge growth in the World population.

The oils and fats industry need to help the World supplying higher and higher amounts of nutritious food products, without increasing land usage. I hope that our conference in Belfast September 2018 will be a huge success. I deliberately write our conference, as the success of the conference depends on all of you, please be prepared to share your research by sending in abstracts and please mark the dates in your calendar and blocks fund in your travel budget to participate.

Our annual conference is the key contributor to the economics of our organization. I have full confidence in the British organization to set-up an interesting and entertaining event. With my very best wishes for a happy and healthy 2018, I also wish you a lot of positive results and great discoveries in this fascinating world of lipids!

Queen's University Belfast

QUB Queen's University Belfast has its roots in the Belfast Academical Institution, which was founded in 1810, one of the United Kingdom's 10 oldest universities, and remains as the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. The present university was first chartered as "Queen's College, Belfast" in 1845, when it was associated with the simultaneously founded Queen's College, Cork, and Queen's College, Galway, as part of the Queen's University of Ireland – founded to encourage higher education for Catholics and Presbyterians, as a counterpart to Trinity College, Dublin, then an Anglican institution.Queen's College, Belfast, opened in 1849.Its main building, the Lanyon Building, was designed by the English architect, Sir Charles Lanyon. At its opening, it had 23 professors and 343 students.

The Irish Universities Act, 1908 dissolved the Royal University of Ireland, which had replaced the Queen's University of Ireland in 1879, and created two separate universities: the current National University of Ireland and Queen's University of Belfast.

The university was one of only eight United Kingdom universities to hold a parliamentary seat in the House of Commons at Westminster until such representation was abolished in 1950. The university was also represented in the Parliament of Northern Ireland from 1920–1968, where its graduates elected four seats. Today, the total student population is close to 25,000.

Queen's is one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland, with a total workforce of 3,903, of whom 2,414 were members of academic, academic-related and research staff and 1,489 were administrative employees.
