Dear Reader,

The Lipids Group of the SCI will host the 2018 Euro Fed Lipid Congress and Expo in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The SCI Lipids Group was formed in 1951 as the Oils & Fats Group, is a founding member of Euro Fed Lipid and previously hosted an EFL Congress in 2004 in Edinburgh, Scotland, which was very successful.

The theme of the meeting in Belfast will be the application of science, technology and nutrition to address the issues arising in our constantly changing world. As well as the usual Euro Fed Lipid Division streams, we will include a stream focussed on dairy fats, since this represents a large industry in Ireland.

The Congress will be held in the attractive Belfast Waterfront, a purpose-built entertainment and conference centre. Of course, while the venue and lecture contents are important, there will be time for networking and catching up with friends, old and new.

With plenty of interesting places in the city, Euro Fed Lipid and the SCI Lipids Group are pleased to welcome you to the 2018 Euro Fed Lipid Congress and Expo in Belfast.

Belfast Belfast is the capital and, with a population of 333.000 inhabitants, largest city of Northern Ireland, and the second largest on the island of Ireland. Belfast was granted city status in 1888.

Belfast was a centre of the Irish linen, tobacco-processing, rope-making and shipbuilding industries: in the early 20th century, Harland and Wolff, which built the RMS Titanic, was the world's biggest and most productive shipyard. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, and was a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century. It has sustained a major aerospace and missiles industry since the mid 1930s. Industrialisation and the inward migration it brought made Belfast Ireland's biggest city at the beginning of the 20th century.

Belfast Today, Belfast remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education, business, and law, and is the economic engine of Northern Ireland. The city suffered greatly during the "Troubles", but since 1998 it has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Additionally, Belfast city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, notably around Victoria Square.

Belfast is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport in the city, and Belfast International Airport 24 km west of the city. Belfast is a major port, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline, including the Harland and Wolff shipyard, and is listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city.

Lipids in Alzheimer disease

Since 2007, the SFEL organizes every 4 years an international conference held in Paris “Lipids & Brain Journées Chevreul” in which have been involved several European scientific associations (2007 DGF, 2011 Norway L&B, 2015 SCI).

Next October, only two years after the large success of the last edition of these journées in 2015, a special Lipid and Brain IV dedicated to “Lipids in Alzheimer disease” will be organized in Nancy.

More than twenty international speakers will present their latest findings about therapies, new vectors and strategies to fight against this world growing disease. This congress aims at gathering various scientist communities, medical practitioners, nutritionists, biochemists, neuroscientists to favour multidisciplinary approaches prevention and treatments against this human pathology. Pr Stephen Cunnane (University of Sherbrooke, Canada) will be honoured for his research on Alzheimer disease and will give a talk entitled “is ketone production part of the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the brain?”

The following topics will be covered:
Physiopathology, Epidemiology and Drug Therapy
Disease Interaction’s with Lipid Metabolism
Impact of Omega 3 Fatty acids and Lipid Nutrition
PUFA and Vectorisation in the Brain

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Nancy for these 3 days of exchanges and discussions next October 2017,

press ‘Nothing is more consistent as change’ and thus nothing is more consistent as the need for continuous education. This is also the case for oil milling. The requirements change continuously and become more and more demanding: not only on the input materials but as well as on the final products (key word: feed and food safety, MCPD, mineral oil…), on the process technology and the processes themselves – in terms of efficiency, safety and utilization.

9th International Symposium on Deep-Frying

Higher Quality, Safer Products and Further Use
30-31 October 2017, Shanghai, China

Pudong The international symposia on deep-fat frying organized through the DGF and Euro Fed Lipid have been held most of time in Europe and North America. This is the first time it is held in China and will be organized jointly by the Euro Fed Lipid and the Chinese Cereals and Oils Association.

There is a long tradition of deep frying in Asia’s cuisine. The oldest recording of frying process was found more than 3000 year old back in the Chinese texts. In recent decades, the rapid development of China’s economy has resulted in a dramatic increase in frying industry. We sincerely hope that this will be an opportunity for the experts and distinguished players in the area share their knowledge and experiences in Shanghai, China.

Furthermore, it will be a great chance for all of participants to get more understanding of the Chinese culinary culture, fast development and potential huge market.
