Dear members and friends of Euro Fed Lipid,
First of all, I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year 2017 with lots of happiness and success in both your personal and professional
lives. I assume many of us won’t regret the year 2016 with its critical worldwide situation. I honestly hope that 2017 will see more peace
worldwide and an end to the rising of populism in many countries, including my own.
But lets be optimistic, and focus on some good news that we had last year, here are a few ones:
In 2016, the total tigers population has increased by 22%, while pandas are not considered an endangered species anymore. In 2016, Costa Rica
managed to live on 100% renewable energy for seven months of the year. India has planted 50 million trees in a single day. We have discovered
1284 new exoplanets and finally, last but not least, Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize!
Speaking of Nobel Prizes, 2017 would be a perfect time for one of our Euro Fed Lipid Member to obtain it. Indeed, this year, our main event
will be held in Sweden in Uppsala, very close to Stockholm and the Nobel Price Ceremony! This 15th annual congress organized by Euro Fed Lipid
will be held from August 27th to 30th under the supervision of the Nordic Lipid Forum as host association. I am convinced that our
Scandinavian colleagues will offer us a wonderful event and with a rich scientific program.
Again, happy New Year 2017!
Wishing you all the best,
Euro Fed Lipid

The Anatomical Theatre
The anatomical theatre completed in 1663 by medical professor and amateur architect Olaus Rudbeck for the University of Uppsala is located
in the idiosyncratic cupola which Rudbeck placed on top of the Gustavianum building, at the time the main building of the university.
Rudbeck had spent time in Leiden, and both the anatomical theatre and the botanical garden he founded in Uppsala in 1655 were influenced
by his experiences there.
The Anatomical Theatre was supposed to be used as a classroom for teaching Medicine. Up until 1766 dissections were carried out in front of
medical students and a paying public on criminals who had been executed.
The theatre was usually a room of roughly amphitheatrical shape, in the centre of which would stand the table on which the dissections of
human or animal bodies took place. Around this table were several circular, elliptic or octagonal tiers with railings, where students or other
observers could stand and get a good view of the dissection almost from above and unencumbered by the spectators in the rows in front. It was
common to display skeletons at some place in the theatre; in Leiden, 17th-century depictions show that the living observers were actually
accompanied in the rows by a large number of animal and human skeletons, some of which held banners with inscriptions such as Memento mori,
or, freely translated, "Remember, you will die".
During the last part of the 18th century and onwards the Anatomical Theatre was used by the University Library.
Around the middle of the 19th century the interior was demolished and the upper section functioned as a zoological museum. In the 1950s the
theatre was restored to its former state.
The premises fascinate a lot of people with its fantastic natural lighting, which creates a very special atmosphere. The dome is swathed
in copper plating on the outside and has been crowned with a small globe, which also functions as a sundial.
