Dear members and friends of Euro Fed Lipid,
The beginning of year 2016 corresponds to the completion of the two years of Euro Fed Lipid presidency by Gerrit Van Duijn.
As vice-president during that period, it was a great honour and chance to work under his supervision, and I would like to thank him very
much for this and for his much appreciated and significant contribution to the development of our Federation.
Together with the new vice President, Hans Christian Holm, and Karin Schwarz who will continue as Treasurer, and also with the board members
and Divisions Chairpersons, we will do our best to carry on with his legacy for the development of our Federation.
In a context of economical, geopolitical and environmental difficulties that were underlined by Gerrit in his latest President Letter, I believe
that we will have the chance to see happier days by a better access to education for young generations, better knowledge transfers, better
sharing of our earth resources and by extended and strengthened international collaborations. Euro Fed Lipid has more than 15 years of
Made of 13 scientific associations and counting more than 2000 members from academia or industry, it constitutes a good
structure where we can all humbly contribute to all this, by interacting in a lively and challenging network of passionate scientists, of
course within Europe, but also with our sister associations on other continents.
Among various conferences that will be organized by our divisions or supported by Euro Fed Lipid through this coming year, our main event will
be the 14th Euro Fed Lipid Congress to be held in that nice and interesting city of Ghent, from 18-21 September. I am very confident that the
BeNeLux Lipid Network (Host association) and the scientific committee will succeed in establishing an excellent scientific program resulting
in a successful event.
I wish you all a happy year 2016,
Euro Fed Lipid President

The Belfry of Ghent
The 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre, the other two belonging to Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas'
Church. Its height makes it the tallest belfry in Belgium. The belfry of Ghent, together with its attached buildings, belongs to the set of belfries of Belgium and France inscribed on
UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Construction of the tower began in 1313 after a design by master mason Jan van Haelst. His plans are still preserved in the Ghent City Museum. After continuing intermittently through wars,
plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. It was near the end of this period that the gilded dragon, brought from Bruges, assumed its place atop the tower.
Through the centuries, the belfry served not only as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower and the place where the documents evidencing
the municipal privileges were kept.
The rectangular hall adjoining the belfry was built to headquarter the affairs of the cloth trade that made the city rich during the Middle Ages. Inside, woollens were officially inspected
and measured; transactions were negotiated. As the cloth industry lost importance, the hall drew new occupants, including a militia guild and a fencing school.

10-12 April 2016, Nuremberg, Germany
In addition to the quality assessment of olive oil and other vegetable oils, the need for authentication is of major concern for consumers and the food industry. Not only expensive
and valuable oils such as olive oil or argan oil, but also cheaper oils purchased in high quantities may be subjected to different kinds of food fraud.
The aim of oil authentication is to protect the consumer from adulteration and the industry from unfair competition.
The symposium is structured to give an overview on the different aspects of authenticity of olive oil and other vegetable oils, from the legal regulations and approaches to traceability
via the statistical techniques to the general and specific analytical aspects. This symposium will present new and fast methods to proof the quality and authenticity of olive oil and other
edible oils and the participants will have the chance to discuss with outstanding experts the different aspects in the field of authenticity. This symposium is aimed at all people working as
legal key opinion leaders, in official and commercial laboratories or in official or commercial food control or food industry. At the end the participants should be provided with the newest
information on authenticity and the latest findings in order to make the market of edible oils fit for the future.

Plant Lipid Awards
THE TERRY GALLIARD MEMORIAL LECTURE AND MEDAL
In recognition of the great contribution to the international plant lipid research from Professor Terry Galliard, the organizer of the first
ISPL in Norwich in 1974, Terry Galliard Memorial Lecture was started on the 11th ISPL in 1994. The Terry Galliard Award will be given to a
scientist who contributes significantly to the field of plant lipid research, is a member of the plant lipid family and has participated
in several of the ISPL. So far eleven Terry Galliard lectures have been held, and the Terry Galliard Medal was first awarded to each of the
T. Galliard lecturer in 2000.
Nominations are now being accepted for the Terry Galliard Award/Medal. Persons interested in submitting a nomination package are asked to
contact Dr. Ingo Heilmann, Halle/Saale: firstname.lastname@example.org
. The nomination deadline is January 15th, 2016.
The ISPL2016 Scientific Advisory Committee will be responsible for reviewing the nominations and facilitating the vote by the plant
lipid community. Please note that all nominators will remain anonymous. The awardee will have the opportunity to give an oral presentation
as part of the conference program.
PAUL K. STUMPF AWARD
Paul K. Stumpf, who died in 2007, is the recognized father of plant lipid (fats and oils) research. A renowned biochemist, Stumpf trained many
students who went on to become leaders in the field, while publishing more than 250 research papers over four decades. Among his achievements
was the discovery in plants of the alpha-oxidation pathway for degrading fatty acids. Genetic defects in the same pathway in animals are linked
to rare hereditary diseases. The award is presented to scientists who have held doctoral degrees for six years or less and so far four earned
the prestigious distinction.
Applications are now being accepted for the Paul K. Stumpf Award. Persons interested in being considered for the Paul K. Stumpf Award are
asked to submit: i) a copy of their CV, ii) a one-page summary of their career and achievements in the area of plant lipid biology, and iii)
a supporting letter from their current and/or past advisor. Application materials should be submitted by e-mail to Dr. Peter Doermann, Bonn,
. The application deadline is January 15th, 2016. The ISPL-2016 Scientific Advisory Committee will be responsible for
deciding the award winner. The awardee will have the opportunity to give an oral presentation as part of the conference program.
