Dear Colleagues,

Ghent The BeNeLux Lipid Network has the honor to host the 14th Euro Fed Lipid Congress 18-21 September 2016 at Ghent Belgium.

The symposium will be take place at the International Conference Center (ICC) located in the green museum area close to the historical centre of one of the most enchanting medieval cities in Europe. From 1000 until 1550 Ghent was the second most important city after Paris in Europe. Nearly 1400 years of history are still palpable in the city today: the medieval Castle of the Counts, the city hall, the imposed St. Bavo’s cathedral with the most important work in Flemish art The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers. Many medieval churches, the Mason’s Guild Hall, the Belfry and the old harbor are highlights in the rich history of a stubborn city.

Sciences and research are flourishing in Ghent due to a famous university and the number of institutions of higher education with more than 70.000 students in a population of 250.000 inhabitants. Highlights are plant biotechnology, medical sciences, veterinary sciences, bioscience engineering, food science and technology. In Belgium and the Netherlands famous universities, research institutions and industries are contributing to a long tradition in scientific education, research and production of food and non-food products.

Belgium is famous worldwide for his Burgundy style of living with a high level of food production and gastronomy, in particular for many traditional beers and high quality chocolates.

The region of Ghent is an economical center due to his seaport with a direct connection with the North Sea. Next to steel manufacture and cars assembly, Ghent seaport is one of the most important harbors for the handling of agricultural products. The development of Ghent Bio -Economy Valley has created the most important center in Europe for the production of biofuels and renewable energy.

The theme of the symposium is dealing with innovations in sustainable food and non-food production from oils, fats and lipids, covering the integrated supply chain. Topics involve Analytics, Authenicity, Lipidomics, Biotechnology and Enzyme Technology, Health and Nutrition, Lipids in Animal Science, Oleochemistry, Biofuel and Biosurfactants, Olive Oil and other Virgin Oils, Palm oil, Microbial and Algae Oils, Lipid Oxidation and Quality, Physical Chemistry, Processing and sustainable Sourcing.

The Scientific Committee and the BeNeLux Lipid Network are delighted to invite all lipid scientists to attend the Euro Fed Lipid Congress in Ghent in September 2016.

Ghent: The best hidden secret

Gent Ghent is located in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university.

Around 650, Saint Amand founded two abbeys in Ghent: St. Peter's (Blandinium) and St Bavo's Abbey. The city grew from several nuclei, the abbeys and a commercial centre. Around 800, Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, appointed Einhard, the biographer of Charlemagne, as abbot of both abbeys. In 851 and 879, the city was however attacked and plundered twice by the Vikings.

ghent Within the protection of the County of Flanders, the city recovered and flourished from the 11th century, growing to become a small city-state. By the 13th century, Ghent was the biggest city in Europe north of the Alps after Paris; it was bigger than Cologne, or Moscow. Within the city walls lived up to 65,000 people. The belfry and the towers of the Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church are just a few examples of the skyline of the period.

The rivers flowed in an area where a lot of land was periodically flooded. These marshes were ideally suited for herding sheep, the wool of which was used for making cloth. During the Middle Ages Ghent was the leading city for cloth.

The wool industry, created the first European industrialized zone in Ghent in the High Middle Ages. The mercantile zone was so highly developed that wool had to be imported from Scotland and England.

Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants

Slide Porto 1st International Symposium on Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants

5-7 June 2016, Porto, Portugal

This meeting will be a great opportunity to discuss various aspects of lipid oxidation and it will be a chance for fruitful discussions of state-of-the-art knowledge and applications in lipid oxidation prevention. Since lipid oxidation is the main cause of chemical degradation of foods, which decreases the commercial shelf-life of products and deteriorates the sensory properties of foods and reduces consumer acceptability, the technical program of the symposium will cover all aspects necessary for a better understanding of the lipid oxidation process and will show possibilities to improve the quality and oxidative stability of food lipids.

Discussions will take place on scientific and technological developments in lipid oxidation and antioxidants in seven sessions covering antioxidant and lipid oxidation evaluation methods, elucidation of lipid oxidation and antioxidant mechanisms, lipid oxidation in multiphase and complex systems, control of lipid oxidation, lipid oxidation and deep frying, extraction of new dietary antioxidants, and nutritional and physiological effects of oxidized lipids and antioxidants.

Please submit your lecture or poster abstract at the congress webpage.
Registration will open in January 2016.
