Dear Reader,
virgin rapeseed oil is a product with a growing market and a growing popularity among customers. While the production process seems to be easy, a flawless oil is in fact surprisingly difficult to obtain.

Sensory properties are the most important factors for the evaluation of the quality of virgin rapeseed oils, as these can be perceived by consumers directly. High quality oils can be distinguished by a fresh seed-like aroma with a slightly nutty aftertaste. Mistakes in the production or crop management have a direct negative effect on the taste of the oil. Such mistakes can often be identified in detail by experienced examiners/ taste testers. On the other hand, flawless oils are strong indicators for good manufacturing practices with high-quality raw materials; such oils are not only tasty but also nutritionally valuable.

Therefore, top chefs are increasingly using these oils in the field of fine dining.

DGF is proud to be a pioneer in the area of quality improvement of virgin rapeseed oils. The association has developed a standard method to evaluate the quality by sensory assays and has introduced the DGF-Rapseedoil-Medal, an annual award for flawless oils under the auspices of the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture and in cooperation with a gourmet magazine and the national association of nutritionists.

To achieve this, DGF has trained and approved two sensory panels for virgin rapeseed oil. These two panels are so far the only ones confirmed by DGF to apply the DGF standard method correctly.

The DGF-Rapeseedoil panels are offering to check regularly the production of oilmills with a critical eye. If you are interested to use this service please contact our headquarters at info@dgfett.de

Beach Resorts around Montpellier





Build between 1960 and 1975 on virgin ground beachfront dunes, artificially irrigated to create a green, stands the resort town of La Grande Motte. The architect Jean Balladur drew inspiration for his architectural urban project in pre-Columbian pyramids of Teotihuacan - Mexico - and modern architecture in Brazil, especially in the works of architect Oscar Niemeyer.

The landscaper Pierre Pillet collaborated on the project, selecting resistant plant species for the sea-climate. Jean Balladur imagined a green city. Also projected parking no more than 600 meters away from the coast, to walk to the beach without using a car.

The project incorporated large open spaces surrounding the pyramids. Squares and parks, and sports and leisure services, would form the new city. Public and private beaches, marina and water sports activities complement.

Palavas-les-flots is another seaside resort, some six km south of Montpellier, at the Gulf of Lion and the Mediterranean Sea. It lies on a strip of sand dunes that separates two lakes, the Étang de l'Arnel and the Étang du Méjean, from the sea.

Its neighbouring communities are Lattes, Pérols, Mauguio and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. The village center is located at the spot where the river Lez flows into the sea through a canalized section. Northwards, it stretches until Mauguio. Southwards, expansion is halted by a military area and an area used by the Ifremer.

Although epidemiological studies strongly suggest an inverse correlation between the consumption of fatty fish and the development of Alzheimer’s disease, data from post-mortem brain and plasma samples are discordant.

This Feature article highlights some of the methodological challenges and potential future directions for the study of docosahexaenoic acid metabolism during normal aging and AD, with the goal to improve dietary strategies to protect the brain from cognitive decline during aging.
