Dear Reader,
We would like to announce with pleasure the launch of a new website: PCSK9 Education and Research Forum: www.pcsk9forum.org

We are in the PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) decade, a shining example of translational medicine. From identification of loss of function mutations in the PCSK9 gene, novel therapies targeting PCSK9 are now in clinical development. Phase III data from the most advanced, monoclonal antibody therapies targeting PCSK9, are being presented at the Scientific Sessions of the American College of Cardiology Congress next week, two as late breaker trials.

In these exciting times, scientists, researchers and clinicians need a common focus for PCSK9 news, views and perspectives. This has been our rationale in developing the PCSK9 Education and Research Forum, a not-for-profit scientific organisation registered in the UK. The Forum aims to expand awareness and knowledge of the significant role played by PCSK9 in lipid and cholesterol metabolism and its value as a novel therapeutic target. The PCSK9 Education and Research Forum is managed by an Executive Editorial Board, supported by an International Advisory Board of experts from Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Japan and Australasia.

The Forum offers clinicians and scientists worldwide FREE MEMBERSHIP by simply registering at our website www.pcsk9forum.org All registrants will receive a regular newsletter which is distributed globally. On behalf of the International Advisory Panel, we would like to invite members of the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids to join us in this global network. If proven, the therapeutic potential of PCSK9 modulation offers the opportunity for clinicians to improve the prognosis of many high-risk patients with atherosclerotic disease. We believe that the PCSK9 Education and Research Forum can play a part in this. Your support is clearly critical to the success of this initiative, and we thank you in advance for your efforts on our behalf.

12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress, 14-17 September 2014, Montpellier, France

12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress, 14-17 September 2014, Montpellier, France

The scientific committee met on 6 March to finalise the lecture programme. As more than 300 suggestions for lectures had been received the committee was spoilt with the number of choices available for the 175 spots and many authors of high quality submissions were asked to change their submission to a poster. The daily updated database containing all lectures and posters can be found here.

Poster abstracts are welcome until September

However, to reach the book of abstracts, submit your poster by 1 July or earlier.

Of Canyons, Caves and Kayaks

North of Montpellier there is a mountaineous region called the Cévennes, part of the Massif Central. The highest point being the Mont Lozère (1702m). The region hosts the Cévennes National Park, created in 1970 and the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d'Ardèche. Two canyons are near the region: the Gorges de la Jonte and the Gorges du Tarn.

The Gorges du Tarn is a canyon formed by the Tarn River between the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre, in southern France. The canyon is about 53 kilometres long and 400m to 600m deep.

Tourism is a main factor in the region, with activities that include Hiking, Kayaking, Speleology, Rock climbing and other outdoor sports and leisures...

The Clamouse cave is another attractive destination to visit. The 17 km long network of stalactite caves was formed by the action of water on the dolomite karst. It was only in 1945 that a team from a Montpellier potholing club discovered this amazing underground world. It is a subterranean wonder that the water has been ceaselessly embellishing for millions of years. It owes its fame to the beauty, variety, abundance and uniqueness of its concretions.

Finally, the medieval village Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is a jewel of Romanesque Art. Built around the Abbey of Gellone, the village has kept its impressive medieval imprint and constitutes a rare, harmonious site in Languedoc.
This Classified Site, is one of the most beautiful villages in France and today its abbey is registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Fat Analysis: 20th Proficiency Test 2014

Organised by the German Society for Fat Science (DGF) and Euro Fed Lipid.

Interlaboratory comparison tests serve laboratories to check applied methods and to recognize systematic errors. They are a central part of every quality assurance system. The DGF herewith announces the 20th interlaboratory comparison test for fat analysis to be carried out in 2014.

Again, 27 parameters can be tested.

Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil and a Used Deep-Frying Oil. (150g each)

Each laboratory may choose an individual set of parameters.

Participation Fee:
The participation 250 Euro + VAT and Shipping (a reduced fee of 200 Euro applies for DGF or Euro Fed Lipid-corporate members).

Information and Registration:

Registration: 01.06. 2014

PUFA modify expression of TGF-β in a co-culture model of colorectal cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells exposed to commensal and pathogenic bacteria
Bentley-Hewitt, Lund and colleagues have demonstrated an interaction between dietary PUFA and epithelial cell response to both commensal and pathogenic bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract by utilising in vitro co-culture models. The data suggest that n-3 PUFAs may provide some protection against the potentially damaging effects of pathogens. Furthermore, the beneficial effects of combining n-3 PUFAs and the commensal bacteria, and potential probiotic, L. gasseri are illustrated by the increased expression of immunoregulatory TGF-β1.

Enrichment of stearidonic acid from echium oil via a two-step lipase-catalyzed esterification
Stearidonic acid, an ω-3 fatty acids, is considered as a source of health beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids for vegetarians. Baik, Kim and colleagues have achieved an enrichment of stearidonic acid (SDA) and -linolenic acid (GLA) from echium oil. The resulting fraction may be applied in the production of novel structured lipids containing significant amounts of the two fatty acids.

Lipid Technology

The physico-chemical basis of phenolic antioxidant activity In this Feature, Laguerre, Lecomte and Villeneuve discuss the complexity of factors determining the antioxidant activity of phenolics, and they ask some crucial questions: Are reducers necessarily antioxidants? How about the antioxidant activity of the oxidation product(s) of phenolics? How can we predict antioxidant activity in natural multiphasic systems? The authors highlight the importance of physico-chemistry as a key to understand the hitherto unknown antioxidant activity determinants.
