January 2014: Welcome Gerrit van Duijn
Contents12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress, 14-17 September 2014, Montpellier, France
Awards for Young Scientists 2014
The end of the year 2013 was also the completion of 4 years of Euro Fed Lipid presidency by Marc Kellens. I thank Marc for his invaluable contribution to the success of our organization. As vice president, I had the chance to learn from him and I will certainly continue to apply many of the “new traditions” he introduced.
My task for the coming two years will be to enlarge the role of Euro Fed Lipid in the field of lipid research and development. This role is already well established for University based R&D, analytical laboratories and R&D by equipment manufacturers. However, the link with activities carried out by the lipid processing industry as well as consumer goods manufacturers, using lipids as an ingredient in their products, needs to be further enforced.
I fully support the statement of Marc in his last president letter (December 2013) that we, as an European organization, have a task to improve global welfare and well-being. This should be achieved in co-operation with our sister companies in the other global regions (AOCS, MPOB, etc.).
I hope that the conference in Montpellier (September 2014) will be a next step in establishing our goals. I have full confidence in the French organizations to set-up an interesting and entertaining event.
My best wishes for a healthy and happy 2014,
Deadline for oral presentations is 14 February 2014

The region between Montpellier and Marseille is the Camargue, which is western Europe's largest river delta. It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons or étangs, cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes.
Approximately a third of the Camargue is either lakes or marshland. The central area around the shoreline of the Étang de Vaccarès has been protected as a regional park since 1927, in recognition of its great importance as a haven for wild birds. In 2008 it was incorporated into the larger Parc naturel régional de Camargue.
The Camargue is home to more than 400 species of birds and has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. Its brine ponds provide one of the few European habitats for the greater flamingo. It must be said he marshes are also a prime habitat for many species of insects, notably (and notoriously) some of the most ferocious mosquitos to be found anywhere in France. The extensive marsh is used as the range for the Camargue Bull and the Camargue Horse (Camarguais).
The white Camargue horses are ridden by the gardians (cowboys), who rear the region's cattle for fighting bulls for export to Spain, as well as sheep. Many of these animals are raised in semi-feral conditions, allowed to roam through the Camargue within a manade, or free-running herd. They are periodically rounded up for culling, medical treatment, or other events.

The European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids (Euro Fed Lipid) announces the Young Lipid Scientists Award.
The prize is granted to applicants for distinguished research in the fields of lipid science and technology.
The Young Lipid Scientists Award consists of
-a free one-year subscription of the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology
-free registration to the Euro Fed Lipid Congress including travel expenses
The winner is expected to give a 20 min oral presentation of her/his work. Applications submitted will be evaluated by experts of the Young Scientists Award Committee.
Personal applications only will be accepted from scientists who are not older than 35 years as of the application date. Original paper(s) not older than 2 years since publication, a 2-page (maximum) summary of the work and a curriculum vitae (all in English, six copies) should be submitted.
The deadline for submission is 31 March of each year. The prize will be awarded during the next Euro Fed Lipid congress. Please send applications to the following address:
