Dear Reader,
2013 will be remembered as a year where we all did our best to recover from the financial crisis of 2008, which generated an economical crisis, moving Europe into recession and unemployment across the continent. 2013 has clearly shown that if we want to solve our problems, we need to become more united, more integrated and less fragmented. The EU has a clear responsibility in that. But this is not only true for our politicians but for everyone living in and around Europe.

Being one of the largest economies in the world, Europe remains one of the pillars of the global economical system. But Europe also has to fulfil further its role in improving the global social system and also global environment. And we all know that our way of living and how we look to our future has to change if we want to achieve a more stable economical, a more righteous social and environmental friendly climate.

Euro Fed Lipid’s goal is to bring together people and organizations, involved in lipid science and technology, so they can exchange ideas; share their concerns, provide solutions and learn what they need to do, to make our lipid world food safer, healthier but also more economical hence more accessible for those who do not have the means or luxury we know in Europe.

I am convinced that the more we get unified, the better we will be able to face the challenges of the future. In our Lipid world, collaborating with and supporting other lipid organizations like AOCS is to be further encouraged therefore.

I’m hopeful but also curious to what 2014 will bring to Euro Fed Lipid and his growing member organizations.

Last but not least, I also want to thank you all for having allowed me to serve Euro Fed Lipid as president from 2010 till 2013. My time has come and my task is now handed over to Gerrit Van Dujin.

Languedoc-Roussillon Wine







Languedoc-Roussillon wine, including the vin de pays labeled Vin de Pays d'Oc, is produced in southern France. The area has around 2,800 km2 under vines and is the single biggest wine-producing region in the world, being responsible for more than a third of France's total wine production. As recently as 2001, the region produced more wine than the entire United States. During both World Wars the Languedoc was responsible for providing the daily wine rations given to French soldiers.


The five best known appellations in the Languedoc include Languedoc AOC (formerly known as the Coteaux du Languedoc), Corbières AOC, Faugères, Minervois AOC, and Saint-Chinian AOCs.


The area is home to numerous grape varieties, including many international varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, and Chardonnay. The traditional Rhône grapes of Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, and Viognier are also prominent.

Chardonnay is a major white grape, used in the Vin de Pays d'Oc and the sparkling Crémant de Limoux. Among the reds, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvedre are major grapes of the Corbières, Faugères, Fitou, and Minervois AOCs. Cinsault is also commonly used in rosé production along with Lladoner Pelut, Picpoul noir, Terret noir, and Grenache. Grenache is also the main grape used in the fortified wines of the Banyuls and Rivesaltes region.

Euro Fed Lipid Highlights 2013: What are the trans fatty acids issues in foods after discontinuation of industrially produced trans fats?

With the decline of dietary trans fatty acids (TFA) derived from partial oil hydrogenation, the interest is focused on the remaining sources of dietary TFA such as ruminant fats, deodorized oils, frying oils, and synthetic conjugated fatty acids supplements. Aldai and colleagues review the classifications of TFA, variations in bio- and industrial syntheses of TFA from different sources, analytical difficulties and concerns related to the current trans fat policies.
