  • Dear Reader,

we are delighted to be hosting the 6th European Symposium on Plant Lipids organized by Euro Fed Lipid. The symposium will be held in Bordeaux, France from July 7th-10th, 2013.

The view on the biological functions and specialized roles of lipids is changing rapidly. Lipids are not longer recognized as building blocks of biological membranes, they are considered as important dynamic actors of many biological processes. Lipidomics has revealed an impressive structural complexity of membrane and storage lipids as well as novel metabolites and pathways. This diversity of the lipidome raises new investigation fields in cellular processes like lipid homeostasis and lipid signalling.

The scientific program will include oral contributions by senior and younger scientists who will cover all the different areas of lipid research. We hope that this venue in Bordeaux will provide highlighted plant lipid researchers an exciting two and a half days meeting as well as good opportunities for exchanges and collaborations. We look forward to seeing you in Bordeaux.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee,

    Rene Lessire

    The Seven Wonders of Poland

(Wikipedia) The Seven Wonders of Poland is a list of cultural wonders located in Poland. During your trip to Cracow you have the chance to see at least three of them.

The creation of the list was supported by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita. Initially over 400 national monuments were listed by internet users as candidates, however in the second round of selections a board of experts reduced the number to 27.

The third and last round - public on line elections - started on 31 August 2007 to select the top seven wonders. Results of the vote were announced on 21 September 2007.

    1) Wieliczka Salt Mine, Wieliczka

    2) Old Town/Vistula panorama, Torun

    3) Malbork Castle, Malbork

    4) Wawel Castle and Cathedral, Crakow

    5) Elblag Canal, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship

    6) Zamosc, Lublin Voivodeship

    7) Cracow Market Square and Old Town

European Journal: Article Commentaries (free content)

EJLST publishes Commentaries discussing the published articles. The Commentaries are typically included in the same issue along with the original article and are freely accessible to all. Commentaries can help you understand and interpret the results in context of existing research and identify outstanding questions. Check out the latest Commentaries online:

    Chocolate under the microscope
What does white chocolate look like under the electron microscope and when imaged by advanced techniques such as confocal Raman microscopy? Everybody has already seen the "white stuff" on the surface of chocolate products - this article explains how topological imperfections contribute to the so-called fat bloom.

The twisted tale of saturated fat
Contrary to the widespread belief that dietary saturated fat is responsible for heart disease, recent evidence suggests that it is the overconsumption of carbohydrate which drives up circulating levels of saturated fat. Volek et al. Lipid Technology 2012, 24, 106-107.

    DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: TODAY!

Organised by the German Society for Fat Science (DGF) and Euro Fed Lipid.

Interlaboratory comparison tests serve laboratories to check applied methods and to recognize systematic errors. They are a central part of every quality assurance system. The DGF herewith announces the 18th interlaboratory comparison test for fat analysis to be carried out in 2012.

This year 27 (4 new!) parameters can be tested.
