Euro Fed Lipid Newsletter April 2012: Cracow Congress Lecture Programme

Contents

Dear Friends,
This year is unique for the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids, we have a jubilee, the 10th Euro Fed Lipid Congress. This year the place to be is Cracow, where the great opportunity to discuss what we - lipids' people - should advice to Europe and to the world, will arise. We will discuss what we know, what we do not know and what we need to know about lipids in the future. Every Section should prepare a short statement about current knowledge and recommendations for the future: what should be done, what problems should be solved, which goals should be achieved.

We should also discuss important lipid problems for Europeans, such as fats and oils labelling (saturated, trans fatty acids, omega-3), bad fat taxes, safety of fats and oils from GMO plants, a European system of safety examination of fried fats & oils, as well as the future of biodiesel, biotechnology of lipids, fully refined vs. cold pressed/virgin oils, functional fats and oils and related material, fish oil and feed for fish farming among many others. This is why we need your voice, your opinion and your share in our final statements.

Join us and be part of it.

The Congress title is: "From Science and Technology to Health". There is no doubt that lipids are of great influence to our health. Probably, they are the most important among all food nutrients. Moreover, the influence of lipids can be extremely good but also extremely bad. Lipid Science and Technology should relate to health issues and this is reflected in all main Congress topics. Discussion is needed to make our raw materials, processing, biotechnology more healthy and safer for the natural environment.

The location of the 10th Euro Fed Lipid Congress is unique: Cracow. The City's magic consists of the unique mix of architecture, art and historical places. Every year Cracow is visited by over 7 million tourists. Our host, Jagiellonian University - is one of the oldest universities around the world (established in 1364). Additionally we have prepared for you great trips to interesting and beautiful places around Cracow. The most important is visit to Nazi Camp Auschwitz Birkenau, place which has to be visited by every human being. Another trip is to one of the most beautiful places in the world: the Wieliczka salt mine.

We are delighted to invite you to this beautiful city and look forward to welcoming you to the 10th Euro Fed Lipid Congress from 23-26 September. Lipids, Cracow and we are waiting for you.

Cracow: The Jewish History

Jews had played an important role in the Crakow region economy since the end thirteenth century.
During the last decade of the fifteenth century anti-Semitism led many Jews to move out of Crakow to nearby Kazimierz. There, they built a Fortress synagogue, the Old Synagogue. A part was known as the Oppidum Judaeorum, the Jewish City, which represented only about one fifth of the geographical area of Kazimierz, but nearly half of its inhabitants. The Oppidum became the main spiritual and cultural centre of Polish Jewry, hosting many of Poland's finest Jewish scholars, artists and craftsmen.

In 1791, Kazimierz lost its status as a separate city and became a district of Crakow. The richer Jewish families quickly moved out of the overcrowded streets of eastern Kazimierz. Because of the injunction against travel on the Sabbath, however, most Jewish families stayed relatively close to the historic synagogues in the old Oppidum, maintaining Kazimierz's reputation as a "Jewish district" long after the concept ceased to have any administrative meaning.

During the Second World War, the Jews of Crakow, including those in Kazimierz, were forced by the Nazis into a crowded ghetto in Podgórze, across the river. Most of them were later killed during the liquidation of the ghetto or in death camps.

Since 1988, now a popular annual Jewish Cultural Festival has drawn Cracovians back to the heart of the Oppidum and re-introduced Jewish culture to a generation of Poles who have grown up without Poland's historic Jewish community. In 1993, Steven Spielberg shot his film Schindler's List largely in Kazimierz (in spite of the fact that very little of the action historically took place there) and this drew international attention to Kazimierz. Since 1993, there have been parallel developments in the restoration of important historic sites in Kazimierz and a booming growth in Jewish-themed restaurants, bars, bookstores and souvenir shops.

Not only that, there are also Jews returning to Kazimierz from Israel and America. Kazimierz with Crakow, is having a booming growth in Jewish population recently.

Fat Analysis: 18th Proficiency Test 2012

Organised by the German Society for Fat Science (DGF) and Euro Fed Lipid.

Interlaboratory comparison tests serve laboratories to check applied methods and to recognize systematic errors. They are a central part of every quality assurance system. The DGF herewith announces the 18th interlaboratory comparison test for fat analysis to be carried out in 2012.

This year 27 (4 new!) parameters can be tested.

Matrix: Vegetable Oil, Olive Oil and a Used Deep-Frying Oil. (150g each)
