Novel Sources for Omega-3 for Food and Feed
14-15 November 2012, Copenhagen, Denmark

Dear Reader,
The demand for healthy marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for feed, functional foods and pharmaceutical products are increasing. For many years fish oil produced from wild fish has been the most important source of marine omega-3 fatty acids. However, the production of fish oil has been stable during the last decade and is not expected to increase due to sustainability reasons. Therefore, to meet future demands new sources of omega-3 fatty acids for feed, food and pharmaceutical products are required.

This meeting will discuss different aspects related to the production, application and nutritional aspects of novel sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which may include single celled organisms (for example. bacteria, microalgae and yeast), macroalgae, gene modified plants, krill etc.

Applications of these new sources of omega-3 fatty acids in feed for fish and land animals, foods, dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products will be discussed. The effect of the use of the novel omega-3 sources on feed properties, growth performance of fish and land animals, nutritional effects in humans as well as effects on the quality of the final food products including oxidation aspects will be covered. Foods may include fish, meat and egg products that have been enriched with omega-3 fatty acids through the feed or through enrichment of the final product. Cracow: The Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka salt mine (a visit is part of the guest tour programme) lies within the Cracow metropolitan area and is often referred to as "the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland." In 1978 it was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites. Even the crystals of the chandeliers are made from rock salt that has been dissolved and reconstituted to achieve a clear, glass-like appearance.

The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation. From its beginning and throughout its existence, the Royal mine was run by the Zupy krakowskie Salt Mines, believed to be the world's 14th-oldest company. Commercial mining was discontinued in 1996 due to low salt prices and mine flooding.

The mine's attractions include dozens of statues and an entire chapel that has been carved out of the rock salt by the miners. The oldest sculptures are augmented by the new carvings by actual artists. About 1.2 million people visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine annually.

The mine, 327 meters deep and 300 km long, features an underground lake; and the new exhibits on the history of salt mining, as well as a 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) touring route (less than 1% of the length of the mine's passages) that includes historic statues and mythical figures carved out of rock salt in distant past. More recent sculptures have been fashioned by contemporary artists.

Euro Fed Lipid Spring Board Meeting

The Euro Fed Lipid council of management consists of representatives of all national associations in membership. It runs Euro Fed Lipid and meets twice each year. While one meeting is always during the annual congress of Euro Fed Lipid in autumn, the meeting in spring takes place at the headquarters in Frankfurt, because it is easily reachable from almost anywhere in Europe.

The next meeting is scheduled for 15 March 2012

The agenda includes discussions and updates regarding the European Journal, the trade fair oils+fats, the balance 2011, future awards, future congresses and division activities.
