Dear reader
with great pleasure we cordially invite you to participate at the 2nd symposium on "Biocatalysis in Lipid Modification" to be held Sept. 19 – 21, 2012 at the Institute of Biochemistry at Greifswald University, Greifswald, Germany (right before the 10th Euro Fed Lipid conference in Cracow, Poland).

The conference in Greifswald aims to bring together researchers from academia and industry active in lipid modification to provide a platform to exchange recent achievements in the field covering basic research as well as aspects related to process development / up-scaling using isolated enzymes and whole cell systems. The sessions will also cover the use of hydrolases in lipid modification (e.g., lipases, phospholipases), protein engineering of enzymes and microorganisms producing lipids. A range of well-reputated invited international speakers has already agreed to present their latest research results.

Cracow: The Wawel



Wawel is an architectural complex erected over many centuries atop a limestone outcrop on the left bank of the Vistula River. It is a place of great significance to the Polish people. The Royal Castle with an armoury and the Cathedral are situated on the hill.

Wawel began to play the role of a centre of political power at the end of the first millennium AD. The first early Romanesque buildings were erected there including a stone cathedral serving the bishopric of Cracow in the year 1000. Since the reign of Casimir the Restorer (1034–1058) Wawel became the leading political and administrative centre for the Polish State.

The Wawel Cathedral is Poland's national sanctuary. Polish Royalty and many distinguished Poles are interred in the Church. Royal coronations took place there also.

The Wawel Castle served as a royal residence and the site where the country's rulers governed Poland for five centuries from 1038 until 1596.

Seasonal fat and fatty acids variations of seven marine fish species from the Mediterranean Sea

Seasonal variations of proximate compositions, muscle lipids and fatty acids (FA) of seven seawater species (Silllago sihoma, Upeneus pori, Sparus aurata, Saurida undosquamis, Epinephelus auneus, Mullus barbatus, Solea solea) from the Mediterranean Sea, were determined in all seasons. The results showed that the fatty acid compositions of each species ranged from 26.41 to 38.70% saturated (SFA), 13.78 to 26.52% monounsaturated (MUFAs) and 25.02 to 50.83% PUFAs. The highest proportions of EPA were obtained from M. barbatus (8.34%) in spring, S. sihoma (7.54%), U. pori (6.75%), S. aurata (6.31%), S. undosquamis (5.12%), E. auneus (5.10%) in summer, and also S. solea (6.19%) in spring. The highest proportions of DHA were found in spring, ranging from 25.14% for M. barbatus to 34.87% for S. aurata, except for S. solea (30.44%) in winter and S. sihoma (15.83%) in summer. The results showed that from a quality point of view, all species were suitable for human nutrition, since muscle lipids are rich in EPA + DHA in all seasons.
