Euro Fed Lipid Newsletter December 2011: Abstracts now citable!

Dear Reader,
Today, the impact of scientific work is commonly evaluated by counting the number of citations of published papers. But what about conference presentations, can they be cited? The delegates of the Euro Fed Lipid congress can now benefit from citations of their lectures and posters.

The abstracts of the 9th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Rotterdam are published in an online only supplement of the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology. All oral and poster presentations can be cited using the author name, presentation title, page, and the DOI number. The Supplement is freely accessible and provides a permanent citable record of the work presented at the Euro Fed Lipid congress.

Also next year, the abstracts of the 10th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Cracow will be available in a citable Online Only Supplement of EJLST - a good reason to submit your abstract now!

Poster abstracts: DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201100363
Lecture abstracts: DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201100364
The abstracts are accessible online in an Online Only Supplement of the Eur. J. Lipid Sci. Technol.

Cracow: The Main Market Square

The Main Market Square in Crakow is a principal urban space located at the center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century, and – at roughly 40,000 m˛  – it is the largest medieval town square in Europe.

The main function of the Market Square was commerce. After the city was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in 1241, the Main Square was rebuilt in 1257 and its commercial role expanded with the Magdeburg rights location of the city by the prince of Kraków, Bolesław V the Chaste.

Among the square's landmarks are the Sukiennice – originally designed in the 14th century as a center for cloth trade, it was gutted by fire in 1555 and rebuilt in the Renaissance style by Giovani il Mosca from Padua. The arcades were added in the 19th century. The ground floor is continually used for commerce with its many souvenir shops and cafés; upstairs is the Gallery of the National Museum.

In the Market Square stands the Gothic St. Mary's Basilica. It features the famous wooden altar, the largest Gothic altarpiece in the World, carved by Veit Stoss. From the church's main tower a trumpet call is sounded every hour. The melody, which used to announce the opening and closing of city-gates, ends unexpectedly in midstream. According to legend, the tune was played during the 13th-century Tatar invasion by a guard warning citizens against the attack. He was shot by a Tatar archer while playing, the bugle-call breaking off at the moment he died.

Since its creation, the level of the Market Square has raised, in some places by over 5 metres. Underneath there are large basements, the most famous of which is the Piwnica pod Baranami. Many cellars are now transformed into pubs and restaurants; others include the Theater Maszkaron and small archeological museum in the basement of the St. Adalbert's church.
