Lipid Newsletter December 2010: 50th anniversary of SISSG
Dear Reader,
The
Italian Society for Far Researches (SISSG) was established on the 10th of December 1960, that
means this year, 2010, it's the 50th anniversary.
To
celebrate this anniversary, SISSG organized a workshop on October, 28th
and 29th, in Massa Marittima, a nice small middle age town in Tuscany,
near Grosseto that last two days, the first day was devoted to the
history of the last 50 years of research in the field of fats and oils
in Italy and Alissa Mattei (SISSG) presented the history of SISSG,
telling the biography of past presidents, then Gian Francesco
Montedoro (University of Perugia and President of the Accademia
dell'Olivo e dell'Olio, estlablished in 1960) and Enrico Tiscornia
(past President
SISSG, University of Genova) remembered how research on fats and oils
was developed in Italy in the considered period.
The history of
fats and oils in Italy is deeply linked to olive oils, so that Fausto
Luchetti, past executive secretary of International Olive Oil Council,
was also invited to tell the story of the body he lead for a couple of
years.
The second day was devoted to some "hot topics" in the
field of fats and oils: in the first a session several point of view on
alkyl esters in olive oils were discussed, in the second one the
presence of selected contaminants (PAHs, "mineral oils" and pesticide
residue) were highlighted and in the last one aspects of
oxidation/antioxidation dealing with shelf life of foods containing
lipids and
with biological effects of oxidation were discussed.
Since
1963, SISSG decided to assign every two years, a gold medal as an award
in memory of Prof. Fachini, the first director of Stazione Sperimentale
per le Industrie degli Oli e dei Grassi (SSOG-Milan), the first award
was for Prof. H.P. Kaufmann, then Prof. J.M. Martinez Moreno (1966),
Dr. O.S. Privett (1968), Prof. R. Rigamonti (1972), Prof. R.T. Holman
(1974), Prof. P. Capella (1976), Prof. J. Pokorny (1979), Prof. G.
Jacini (1983), Prof. U. Pallotta (1985), Prof. D. Firestone (1986),
Prof. K. Mangold (1987), dott. Graille (1996), Prof. R. Monacelli
(2003), within the celebration of the 50 anniversary, the managing
board of SISSG assigned the award to Enrico Tiscornia and Gian
Francesco Montedoro.
Besides this workshop, in 2009 and 2010,
SISSG organized several other workshops, each devoted to a peculiar
topic: an international workshop on Contaminants in edible Fats and
oils in Udine, on November, 2009, a workshop on "Non separative
techniques in assessing quality of olive oils" in Trieste, March 2010,
a workshop on "Recent development of refining techniques and quality of
edible fats and oils" in Bologna, May, 2010.
Audience was made both
by researchers of University and Research institute and by companies
technicians, the opinion of the present President of SISSG, Lanfranco
Conte is very positive on this issue as the role of a scientific
society, he said, is also to build a bridge between researchers and
those who will use results of research.

| Rotterdam: A
port of importance | |
| Rotterdam
is located in the Dutch province of South Holland. The municipality is
the second
largest in the country, with a population of 600.000.
The
port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe. From 1962 to 2004 it
was
the world's busiest port. Rotterdam is on
the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas ('New Meuse'), one of the channels
in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The name Rotterdam
derives from a dam in the Rotte river. On 7
June 1340, Count
Willem IV of Holland granted city rights to Rotterdam, which then had
approximately 2000 inhabitants. Around 1350 a shipping canal, the
Rotterdamse Schie was completed, which provided Rotterdam access to the
larger towns in the north, allowing it to become a local transshipment
center between Holland, England and Germany, and to urbanize. The
port of Rotterdam
grew slowly but steadily into a port of importance, becoming the seat
of one of the six 'chambers' of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie
(VOC), the Dutch East India Company. | Rotterdam,
