Lipid Newsletter September 2010: Countdown to the biggest fats&oils
congress in Germany since 1973
Dear Reader, Nordic
Lipidforum is for the third time organizing The Lipidforum Academy,
15th to 19th June 2011, in Ålesund, Norway. The aim of the course
is to
give the participants a relative broad overview on selected topics
within the field of lipid science and technology (e . g Basic Lipid
Chemistry, Lipids in Food, Lipids in Nutrition; Lipid Raw
Material/Lipid Isolation, Lipid Analyses) as well some more specialized
lectures given by leading experts in their field (e. g. Lipids in
Nutrigenomics, Enzyme Techniques).
The course is primarily
targeting PhD students that are in the early part of their PhD studies
and employees in the fats and oil industry that wants a broad basic
introduction to the field.
Cooperation between academia and
industry is one on the primary aims of Nordic Lipidforum, hence, we
strive to attract participants from both corporate and academic
organizations. During the course, the students also perform a minor
project, were PhD students and participants from the industry work
together. Anyone that are interested in getting further information
about Lipid Forum Academy, or The Nordic Lipid Symposium, which is held
in Ålesund from June, 19th to 22th, can contact Jon Aulie (jon.aulie@fhl.no).

| Munich: The
Viktualienmarkt | |
| The
Viktualienmarkt is a daily
food market and a square in the center of Munich.
The
Viktualienmarkt developed from an original farmers' market to a popular
market for gourmets. The selection, variety and exclusiveness of the
products offered contribute to the market's special flair. On an area
covering 22.000m², 140 stalls and shops offer flowers, exotic
fruit,
game poultry, spices, cheese, fish, juices etc. Nowhere else in Munich
can you find a greater variety of fresh food and delicacies.
Most
stalls and shops are open during the official opening hours (Monday to
Saturday 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.); but the Biergarten doesn't open until 9
a.m. Many stalls close at 6 p.m., before the standard closing time.
There are special opening hours for flower shops, bakeries and
restaurants.
In a 2009 New York Times article about meals worth
a plane trip across the Atlantic, food critic Mimi Sheraton picked a
snack of sausages at the Viktualienmarkt.
The market also hosts
a number of traditional and folkloric events such as weighing
celebrities, brewers day, gardeners day, opening of the asparagus
season, summer festival, dance of the market women on Shrove Tuesday
etc. Hence the Viktualienmarkt, which has been a pedestrian zone since
November 6, 1975 is also a meeting point and a place to chill.

Yabited, the
Turkish Lipid Group | |
|
The Turkish Lipid
Group (Yabited)
was officially founded and recognized by the Turkish authorities in
December 2009. After recognization, the group has started to accept
members from universities, industry and government. The executive
committee met on 29 May 2010 in Adana. About 55 members attended the
meeting and decided to apply for the institutional membership as 12th
association within Euro Fed Lipid. This
application has now been formally submitted and will be discussed by
the Euro Fed Lipid board on its next meeting. One of the challenging
tasks awaiting Yabited is expected to be the hosting of the 11th
Euro Fed Lipid congress and 30th ISF lectures series in
Antalya/Turkey (27-20 October 2013). To find
