 Euro
Fed Lipid Newsletter August 2009: News from the divisions
Dear Reader, the plant lipids
division, focusing on understanding and exploiting the rich chemical
diversity of the "green" Kingdom now has two new
chairpersons. Joining Prof. Ivo Feussner in this division are Dr.
Rene Lessire (Universite Bordeaux II, France) and Prof. Johnathan
Napier (Rothamsted Research, UK) - both have expertise in basic and
applied aspects of plant lipids, including biotechnology. The two of
them replace Elisabeth Blée, and all recognise the contribution she has
made to the continued success of the Plant Lipids Division. With
the growing appreciation of the contribution plant lipid will make to
the bio-economy, ranging from biofuels to high value nutritional fatty
acids, it is an exciting time to be carrying out research in this field. If
you are a member of Euro Fed Lipid and you wish to join the plant lipid
division (free of charge) or any other of the Euro Fed Lipid divisions
simply contact the headquarters.

LAST
REMINDER Deadline for Early Bird Registrations: 1 September 2009
Please take the time and
register
today for the 7th Euro Fed Lipid congress in Graz if you have not done
so already! This is the last newsletter before we reach the
early-bird deadline on 1 September.
Delegates
from 50 countries
are expected to participate in this main European meeting of oils, fats
and lipids professionals. A typical Euro Fed Lipid congress is
attended by 50% delegates from industry and 50% from academia. This
includes a high proportion of (postgraduate) students discussing their
first research results with senior researcher and industrial
professionals.
200 lectures and more than 300 posters shall
provide the current status and future developments in a multitude of
discliplines concerned
with fats and oils. But it is not only the top-class science that has
made the Euro Fed Lipid congress so tremendously popular: The
perfect opportunity for international networking may be as important a
reason to attend.

Short Course, 17-18 October:

| Graz - Slow Down |
|
| Much has already been written
about the special southern flair of the city; many people appreciate
its "italianitá" - and possibly overlook the fact that Graz has drawn
on a wide range of influences to become a quite unique place. It is
located at an intersection of European cultural regions where the
Italian, Pannonian and Slavonic have all blended beneath the external
fabric of the city.
On the Clock Tower, the emblem
of Graz, the big hand shows the hours and the little hand shows the
minutes. This isn't a foolish flight of fancy but a well worked out
trick to make peoples' lives that more pleasant. For in the days when
not everyone carried a watch about them it was easy to glance at the
clock and see how late it was. Most importantly, it always tended to
show that there was just enough time to enjoy a final swift glass of
wine among friends. There's still plenty of time to do so today.
In
Austria, Graz and its surrounding areas are considered the land of milk
and honey for the rest of the nation: the fantastic white wines, unique
pumpkin seed oil, delicious cured meats and exquisite schnapps form the
perfect basis for a culture of top class cuisine that pays heed to the
regional and nonchalantly integrates the international.
