Euro Fed Lipid 2009 in Graz, Austria? Yes,
we can!
Dear colleagues,
Whenever I organized a
conference in my hometown Graz - and this happened several times in the
past - I had my ups and downs of hopes and concerns. Is the program
attractive enough? Will the delegates like the conference venue? Do we
have enough money to pay for the thousand things which are necessary to
arrange a nice meeting? These were only some of the burning questions
that tortured me in my sleepless nights, especially when the opening of
the conference came closer and closer. On the other hand, there was
always the confidence that we had well selected and excellent speakers,
sponsors were very helpful, and colleagues and students supported my
efforts. In the end, of course, you just need a little bit of luck,
that the flight of your most prominent speaker is not cancelled,
abstract books are printed in time, and computers to not break during
the plenary lecture.
All these thoughts came to my mind when I
agreed to organize the 7th Euro Fed Lipid Congress in Graz, Austria. As
always, I was hesitating when I was asked, but pretty soon I convinced
myself that I should go for it. Organizing a conference is a tribute to
the scientific community and a little bit of paying back to science for
the excitement of research and to colleagues for enthusiasm,
comradeship and even friendship. I think that most of us have these
feelings when taking over the challenge of organizing a congress.
So
far, planning and preparation of the 7th Euro Fed Lipid Congress which
will be held under the motto "Lipids, Fats and Oils: From Knowledge to
Application" on 18-21 October 2009 in Graz, Austria, went really well.
I was especially impressed by the willingness of the Austrian public
authorities such as the City of Graz, the Federal Government of Styria
and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, to support
my initiative. Also the Graz University of Technology and various
Research Networks in Graz were extremely supportive. Finally, my
colleagues in Graz helped and encouraged me a lot especially in the
first phase of planning this conference.
The stage is set! As
the chairman of the 7th Euro Fed Lipid Congress it is my pleasure to
invite you to this international meeting of experts from various fields
of lipid, fat and oil research. I look forward to welcoming many of you
in Graz in October 2009!

| What
to eat
in Graz? | |
| The
Austrian Cuisine is composed of influences from throughout
the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Regional cuisines from Italy,
Hungary and the Balkans have had an influence on Austrian cooking, and
in
turn this fusion of styles was influential throughout the Empire.
The
famous Wiener Schnitzel, for example, is thought to have originated in
Milan in the 16th century, from where it was taken to Vienna, and
popularised as Wiener Schnitzel.
The most famous dessert is the
Apple Strudel, layers of thin pastry surrounding a filling of apple,
usually with cinnamon and raisins. Other strudels are also popular,
such as those filled with sweetened curd cheese called Topfen, sour
cherry (Weichselstrudel), sweet cherry and poppy seed strudel
(Mohnstrudel).
Another favourite is Kaiserschmarr'n, a rich
fluffy sweet pancake made with raisins and other fruits, broken
into pieces and served with a fruit compote (traditionally made of
plums called Zwetschkenröster) for dipping,
Austrian cuisine is
most often associated with Viennese cuisine, but there are significant
regional variations.
In Styrian Buschenschanken (inns),
Verhackertes (a spread made from finely chopped raw bacon) is served.
Schilcher, a very dry rosé, is the regional style of wine in
West
Styria. A typically Styrian delicacy is pumpkin seed oil, which lends
itself particularly to salads on account of its nutty taste. Many
varieties of pumpkin dishes are also very popular. Heidensterz, a
pancake
made from buckwheat flour, is a local dish enjoyed in cold weather.
