Euro Fed Lipid Newsletter January 2011: President's New Year's Address

Dear Reader,
2010 was for many people not an easy year. Economy still recovering from the 2008-2009 crisis and the world more than ever before concerned about health of mother earth. But signs are good for 2011, with an ongoing challenge of finding the proper balance between economical growth, social justice and environmental responsibility.
For Euro Fed Lipid, 2010 was the year where we welcomed our 12th member, the Turkish Lipid Association YABITED.
The 4th International Symposium on Dietary Fatty Acids and Health, held in March in Frankfurt and the FEBS Workshop on Microbial Lipids in May in Vienna, fulfilled the expectations. My sincere thanks go to the organizers, to prof. Richter/prof. Bockisch and prof. Daum. I hope that these events will stimulate other members and member organizations to follow their example, so we may see more such initiatives in the next years. The Euro Fed Lipid organization is there to help and to assist where needed.
The 8th Euro Fed Lipid Congress was held this year in November in Munich, Germany with 600 delegates attending from over 50 countries, about 1/3 coming from industry, 2/3 from academy. The Euro Fed Lipid Technology award was presented to prof. Shahidi, the Science award to prof. Staels and the Young lipid scientist award to prof. Meier. And for the first time, a Fellow award was granted to prof. Michel Parmentier for his commitment and contribution to the Euro Fed Lipid organisation.
I would also like to express my gratitude to prof. Bornscheuer, dr. Schurz and their team for the good organisation and scientific content of this Munich congress.
The 9th Euro Fed Lipid Congress will take place end September in Rotterdam, Holland, heart of the European edible oil processing industry. Focus is on oils, fats and lipids for a more healthy and sustainable world. So I hope to see even more people from industry attending this congress.
Gerrit Van Duijn, Eckhard Flöter and Ronald Mensink for sure will do their utmost to further strengthen the relation between industry and academy.
Another not to be missed event in 2011, supported actively by Euro Fed Lipid, is the 5th European Symposium on Plant Lipids, which will be held in July in Gdansk, Poland. More information can be found on our website.

Last but not least my special thanks also to Frank, Sevim and Andrea for keeping the Euro Fed Lipid machine well oiled.

I'm looking forward to what 2011 will bring for Euro Fed Lipid and his growing member organizations.

With my very best personal wishes for a "healthy and sustainable" 2011,

Dr.Ir. Marc Kellens

Rotterdam: Fancy Modern Architecture

Heavily destructed in WW II, the re-constructed center of Rotterdam has become the site of ambitious new architecture. The city has a reputation in being a platform for architectural development and education through the Berlage Institute, a postgraduate laboratory of architecture, and the NAi (Netherlands Architecture Institute).

Rotterdam is also famous for its Kubuswoningen or cube houses built by architect Piet Blom in 1984. In addition to that there are many international well known architects based in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam houses several of the tallest structures in the Netherlands:
The Erasmus Bridge (1996) is a 790-meter cable stayed bridge linking the north and south of Rotterdam. It is held up by a 138 meters tall pylon with a characteristic bend, earning the bridge its nickname 'De Zwaan' ('the Swan').

Rotterdam has the tallest residential building in the Netherlands: the Montevideo Tower (160 m).

The city also houses the 186 meters tall Euromast, which has long been a major tourist attraction. It was built in 1960, initially reaching a height of 101 meters in 1970, the Euromast was extended by 85 meters to its current height.
