Leipzig

[updated 30.01.2017]

Gericht Leipzig has always been a trade city, situated during the time of the Holy Roman Empire at the intersection of two important trade routes. At one time, Leipzig was one of the major European centres of learning and culture in fields such as music and publishing. After World War II, Leipzig became a major urban centre within the Communist German Democratic Republic.

Nikolaikirche Johann Sebastian Bach worked in Leipzig from 1723 to 1750, conducting the St. Thomas Church Choir, at the St. Thomas Church, the St. Nicholas Church and the Paulinerkirche. The St. Nicholas Church later played a significant role in instigating the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, through events which took place 1989 in and around it.

Gewandhaus The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. It is named after the concert hall in which it is based, the Gewandhaus. The list of music directors contains names like Felix Mendelssohn, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Kurt Masur.
