The Venue

Trade, shipping and international contacts have characterised Gothenburg ever since it was founded in 1621 by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. The city was built by Dutchmen. In the 17th century the official languages were Dutch, German, Swedish and English. In 1731, the Swedish East India Company began trading with the east. Porcelain, tea, spices, textiles and other luxury goods of the time were shipped to Gothenburg. British lifestyle and customs became the height of fashion and Gotheburg was given the nickname "Little London". In the 19th century, Gothenburg became industrialised. The shipyards grew large, but declined in the 1970's. The old harbour and shipbuilding area have now been transformed in residential areas, workplaces and boulevards.

Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city, with 460.000 inhabitants (800.000 in the region). However, there is a friendly, small-scale atmosphere and a unique interplay between politicians, the business community and the universities, which is know as "the spirit of Göteborg". The city is the home of Göteborg University, Chalmers University of Technology and the IT university. It makes it Sweden's second largest university city with more than 50.000 students. Renowned companies based in Gothenburg are Volvo, Hasselblad, SKF, Ericsson and Nobel Biocare.

Gothenburg is easily accessible (airport 20 min from city center, taxi or bus connection) with direct flights to (e.g.) Stockholm, Amsterdam, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Birmingham, Graz, Lyon, London, Manchester, Milano, Munich. Oslo, Paris Vienna etc (26 destinations in total). Budget carriers operate from (e.g.) Glasgow, London, Frankfurt-Hahn.
