The European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids (Euro Fed Lipid) is a Federation of European Fats and Oil societies and associations, which accepts individual and corporate members as well. Thus far it is a network of 1700 lipid professionals and companies working together to improve lipid science and technology in Europe.
Previously, scientific societies devoted to lipids, fats and oils in Europe have operated at limited national and regional levels, and have been mainly run by volunteers. Even worse, most European countries do not have such structures at all. This has to be seen vis-à-vis the situation in the United States and Southeast Asia where strong organisations exist which operate globally. During the nineties it became apparent that the traditional structures in Europe did not match the requirements of the European scientific community in the Fats & Oils area. In recognition of this situation, scientific societies from France, Germany, Great Britain and The Netherlands started to promote co-operation and established the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids.
Since the formal foundation of Euro Fed Lipid on 19 September 2001 during the ISF Congress in Berlin, the Federation established itself on the Lipids map though events such as the Euro Fed Lipid Congress Series, other activities and its publishing organ the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology. Euro Fed Lipid now counts among its member societies the most important Fats and Oils associations in Europe.
Euro Fed Lipid is developing a conference structure to safeguard top quality programmes and to attract appropriate audiences. In addition Euro Fed Lipid co-ordinates planning to avoid possible overlaps. The central part of the conference scheme is the annual Euro Fed Lipid congress, to be held in different countries in Europe. This main event is intended to bring together the major disciplines of European lipid research, this in turn giving a perfect opportunity for networking and to present new technologies and research. Congresses and symposia on a smaller scale dealing with more specialised topics are organised constantly.
European scientific divisions, devoted to specific research areas, will be the centres of the Federation's life. They will promote the scientific exchange within Europe and will be the basis for building the network.

production and processing of oils and fats made from renewable resources.
It examines current trends and informs visitors about the latest
technological developments, covering everything from raw and auxiliary materials
to processing, quality assurance, packaging and logistics. That makes oils+fats
the most important industry gathering for decision-makers and experts in the
oils and fats industry.
Increasing awareness of matters relating to lipids, fats and oils is one important task of Euro Fed Lipid. Therefore the public understanding and acceptance of lipid science and technology is being promoted.
One major goal of Euro Fed Lipid is to develop the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology (www.ejlst.de) into a globally recognised scientific publication. The journal, published by Wiley-VCH, is a print and electronic journal circulating articles in the field of lipid science and technology. The journal considers articles with respect to scientific and geographical integration of the multifaceted European lipid science and technology spectrum and beyond. It is the official journal of the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids.

Euro Fed Lipid presents
two different awards to renowned scientists, namely the "European Lipid
Science Award" and the "European Lipid Technology Award". Both prizes
have been awarded for the first time during the second Euro Fed Lipid
Congress in Strasbourg, 2002. Young scientists are invited to apply
for the "European Young Lipid Science Award".

Euro Fed Lipid is build upon its member societies. All members of the member societies are automatically members of Euro Fed Lipid. However, Euro Fed Lipid intends to attract additional individuals and companies throughout the scientific community to become a true pan-European and global body and to generate a pertinent European database of human resources in the lipids, fats and oils area.
Thus, there are two ways to become a Euro Fed Lipid member and to participate in the European network:
1. joining one of the participating societies (a list of participating societies can be found at www.eurofedlipid.org) and thus becoming a full Euro Fed Lipid member, or
2. joining Euro Fed Lipid directly either as an individual or as a company member.
With growing co-operation within the European Union, international networking is very important, and a critical step towards successful research in the future. While national scientific societies usually guarantee the co-operation within their countries, there was an excruciating gap on the European level. Euro Fed Lipid was founded to fill this gap. Euro Fed Lipid members get access to the latest news in their area of interest and have ample opportunities for networking with colleagues from other European countries. Of course the Euro Fed Lipid membership offers several direct financial benefits, like reduced congress fees, a very attractive subscription rate for the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology and a reduced rate for the "Standard methods for the analysis of fats and other lipids".
